Seating depth in 308 brass

Fellas I got a new barrel and to seat the bullet (Berger 185gr Hybrid Target).015 from the lands I will have apx .175 of the bullet in the case neck(plus the boat tail portion)
I have heard you should have a Caliber (.308) in the neck for good tension,so will .175 work or not as I would like to start seating the bullet + - this dimension
Thanks

Seating depth is not neck tension. Neck tension is basically how much the OD of the neck grows after seating the bullet. For 7mm and up I would have .002" in neck tension.

Do you know what the neck diameter is for new barrel?

I'm seating Sierra TMK 168s 0.270" of the bearing surface into the neck. This is .308 Win. My neck tension is 0.002". This works great for me.

Your mileage, of course, may vary.

Really depends on what type of gun it is. If it is an AR-10 or even a bolt gun like an AI AT and you are going to shoot the reloads from a mag, you will need more of the bullet in the neck to keep the bullet in place sitting in the mag when the gun fires. In your case, most likely a bolt gun and if you are also doing single load, then this whole idea of a caliber in the neck really means little.

Yes it is for single load for a tube gun with pacnor heavy palma barrel.
I just have never seated a bullet with this little bearing surface in the neck and just wanted to make sure others have set the bullet this shallow without causing other problems.

My understanding is some people don’t like it because if you have to eject an unfired round, sometimes the bullet gets pulled out and the powder can get dumped into your chamber/action.
