Searching for powder for 20 Vartarg, filling brass AA2200, RL7

Well, so far on my new Vartarg, I've tried Accuracy 2200 and the brass almost full, 21.5 produces 3550 and the same with RL7. Full case produces 3550 at 19.3 gr. of RL 7. I wonder how to get the speed up to 3700-3800 with a powder that does not fill the case. Can anyone tell me which one to use? I am using ProChrony for the chrono and 32 grain Vmax bullets. Just in case the chronograph is bad, I have a 35P coming this next week. My tightest groups were at 19grain of RL7 and the Burger 35 grain bullet (seems more accurate than the 32 grain Vmax). Speed just under 3550. If the chrono is correct, this is the one I'll load 300 rounds if I can't think of another powder.

I ran into the same thing when I was running a 20 vartarg. Most of my loads were running around 3,500 to a max of 3,700 fps utilizing H4198. No matter what powder I used in my 20vt I couldn't get anything over 3,700 fps. After that I designed the 20SCC which is basically an Ackley improved 20vt and have never looked back. Now my fireforming loads produce 4,000 fps with a 32 grain varmageddon bullet and excellent accuracy. I am utilizing Accurate 2200 powder.

Nice! What does the SCC stand for? I know my gunsmith doesn't have that reamer. I have H4198 but have not tried it yet as I assumed RL 7 would be about the same. Guess I'll load up some H4198 tomorrow and see if I get the same results.

SCC = Small Caliber Club

It's possible that you have a barrel that is a little slower, this could cause a noticeable velocity loss. What brand, length, and type of barrel are you running? In 20 Caliber cartridges I have always gotten my top velocities from 3 groove barrels.

It's a Hart 22" SS with a 1-12 twist and pretty big around (don't know the number of barrel). I'll have to ask the gunsmith about the 3 groove deal. Maybe it's a little slow because of the 22" barrel. I don't think my rounds at 3550fps will make much difference on prairie dogs. My other two guns are the same barrel but in 24" and a 20 Practical and .204Ruger.

On your next 20cal barrel give a Pacnor 3groove 11 twist a try. I bet it gives you a bit more velocity & cleans easier with little to no copper fouling.

I'd rate Norma 200 as a scootch quicker than H4198 and smaller granules/higher fill, but it ain't gonna pick up 200 FPS. Easiest way to pick up ~100 FPS is add 4" of barrel.
