Screamin good .243 loads

:)I need load information for a .243, 1-10 in. twist barrel. I'm being specific about cartridge and twist rate because load recipes for another 6mm cartridge or a 1-8/other twist .243 ain't the same as my rifle and I can't expect to make comparisons. I understand that a 1-10 twist barrel will have an optimum bullet weight or a bullet weight that works better accuracywise per the twist rate. My shooting will be 400 plus [600 plus?] varminting with this rifle. Keep those load recipes coming in the first thread [and be sure to mention twist rate along with the other pertinent information about your gun/load combos] and don't keep those screamin good, long range .243, 1-10 twist loads all to yourself. Help this information needy shooter out.

Check your Hodgdon manual.55 grain ballistic tips using H380.You'll need a drop tube.Use the normal safe loading technic and work up to it.

What I'm after is to see if there are 1-10 twist .243 shooters who are gettin good results with bullets in the 87gr to 105gr range out past 400yds. I'm at about 4000ft alt. where I live and this might help that twist? The more load recipes posted the better Idea I can get as to what to expect. Is anybody out there gettin good results with those bullet weights in spite of the 1-10 twist?

I'm shooting the 87 grn. V-Maxes in a 1-10" .243 A.I. with H4831 powder with excellent results and accuracy out to 500 meters. The 105's will not stabilize in my barrel and I believe a 1-9" is required.

The Lapua 90g scenars are good to go in my 1 in 10 twist Blaser LRS2 243, Got great accuracy from the berger VLD 95g bullets seated to lands they cloverd at 200y, 46.6 n160 Lapua brass, cci benchrest, 95g VLD mollys, work up Load, paul.

I was specifically gonna try the 87vmax, 90 scenars and the Berger 95vlds. Glad to hear they work good in your rifles. Gettin excited about recieving my gun and starting load and bullet tests. Thanks, Wyo:)

Ditto on the 88gr Bergers. I am using 44.2 gr H4350 for 33xx fps and great accuracy in my Sako .243. Work up slow! I also like the 90 gr Berger BT with 43.1 gr H4350. It gives the same accuracy as the 88s, but the trajectory is better with the speed advantage of the 88s for my purposes. Best of luck!

I have found that the 87 Vmax with 45 gr of H4350 and CCI250 primers shoots well in my 10 twist M70. I havent had a chance to chrony them yet. But I shot a 600 F-Class match with it and it was very accurate. Good luck.

I am getting close to 1/4 in groups with 90gr Speers in my 10in twist Krieger. I am very pleased as this is a hunting rig and these bullets are not known for accuracy. Im using 43.5 gr of H414 CCI BR2 primers, Nosler Brass. The gun is a trued 700 in a bedded factory laminated stock with factory trigger. The barrel is a fluted Krieger stainless in Remington varmint contour.

I have been playing with a CZ550 in .243 which has a 1/10 twist. The best results I have had out of this gun this far is with Sierra 85gr HPBTs using WW brass, CCI BR2 and a slow charge of 35.5 gr,still testing higher charges).

The next best setup I've found was using 87 gr VMAX with WW brass, CCI BR2 and 37.0 grains of RL-15.

In trying to use this gun for big game hunting, I've had very POOR accuracy with 100 gr Remington Core-Lokts. These will group no better than 1.5" @ 100 yds.

Remember the Greenhill formula for determining twist rates for weight:

Twist = 150 X,DxD)/L

Where:
D = bullet diameter in inches
L = bullet length in inches

My Sako 1/10T .243 DID NOT like H4350 but loved the IMR 4350. Best groups I ever got with Berger 90g HPBT Match Moly with 42.5g IMR4350.

I am using a factory savage in 243 win,1-9.25"twist) and I noticed the same thing as hunt127588 noticed, that 100gr remington core-lokts do not work well, around 1.5"-1.25"). So I switched to 80gr speers and they grouped 5/8". But all the above was factory loads and I'm now going to start handloading for this rifle and I'm wondering exactly what bullet weight would work best for my 1-9.25" twist rate?

Hey guys, I am new to the forum and would like to say thanks for the info in this page. I shoot a Savage 12 BVSS in 243 win. with a 1 9 1/4 twist, and I also had trouble with the corelok bullets. I started reloading my own bullets and gave the Hornady 105 A-Max a shot, and they shoot great. I am reloading with Ram shot hunter with mag primers and pushing them at 3150fps. They shoot great from 100 yards up to 1000 yards, I have done well in both F class tourn. I have comp. in. I also reloaded some 87 V-Max,3350fps) they are sweet to shoot up 600 yards. Thanks for the time and the best of luck in life and out at the range.

Smokin,
What barrel length is your Savage? I have a Rem 700adl w/22" and am thinking about the 105's also. Do you think I can use them with the 22" barrel and can I drop to about 3000fps and still keep stabilized, barrel life issue).
This is my first post here and do not mean to hi-jack this thread. Thanks guys

FNG,

WELCOME TO THE FORUM, I AM NEW TO THIS FORUM ALSO. I AM NOT SURE WHAT TWIST YOU HAVE IN YOUR RIFLE BUT I BELIEVE THAT IT CAN STABILIZE THE 105 A MAX. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU HAVE A SHORTER BARREL, TO PUSH THE BULLETS FASTER, REQUIRES YOU TO LOAD THEM JUST A BIT HOTTER. THAT IS WHEN YOU START RUNNING INTO SOME PROBLEMS WITH PRESSURE AND BARREL LIFE. I WOULD GO WITH MAG PRIMERS, AND NOT TO SLOW OF A BURNING POWDER. ALSO IF YOU LIKE GIVE THE HORNADY 105 MOLLY A TRY. I WOULD NOT WORRY ABOUT YOUR BARREL LENGTH, JUST CONCENTRATE IN GETTING THE LOADS AS ACCURATE AS POSSIBLE. I HAVE A 24 INCH BARREL IN MY SAVAGE, IT TOOK ME SOME TIME TO FINALLY GET MY LOAD SHOOTING THE WAY I WANTED IT TO. THE BEST OF LUCK WITH YOUR RIFLE AND YOUR LOAD FNG.

Shooting the 65 grain V-Max with Reloader 15. This one is a keeper. 41.7 gr for my rifle, an old 700 BDL. I believe a good starting point to be around 40 or so.

Doggie acrobatics very satisfactory.

my 243 is a 1/9 twist but I am so impressed with the AA4350, data85, and data86 powders in 243 it is amazing I started with a phone call to accurate and talked to johan, he is a really smart guy. he gave me max loads for the various bullets and suggested I start at 39 gr. and work up twards those limits. the 39 grain l;oad with anyof te 3 powders shot so well I never pushed it any farther. Will your gun shoot 100gr bullets my nine twist will, but I dont know if a 10 twist will. I have tried everything from 70gr up to 100gr with 39gr loads it is a great place to start I have not shot any 400-600yd shots but the come ups from 200 to 300 are respectable I am guessing velocity arount 2750 w/100gr bullets and of course faster with the smaller pills. I am now working on 6xc loads for these powders in my t2k
