Scratched Chamber- Should I try to polish it out

So I just got my rifle back from SSS recently for T&T and action polish. The first thing I did when I got the rifle back was to start work up a load and use my new hornady lock and load oal gauge. I noticed right away when putting the modified case (6br) in the chamber that is was real tight and came out scratched just beneath the shoulder. Not happy but continued on and when I chamber a round, it's little tight and the brass come out with scratches. I emailed SSS with no reply.

Should I try to polish it out with something or just leave it be?

Don't know your time frame but I would attempt to get an answer from SSS before I did anything. I know they are behind on their e-mail answers.

Find someone with a bore scope and see what you have. It mite be just a small tailing that you embed when you first shot it .My self I always J B my chamber and the leads before I shoot it.

I noticed it before I shot it. I also had someone look at it with a bore scope and its clearly scratched. Would jb paste get it out?

if you plan tokeep the rifle, send it back,
they may have to just polish (at their risk, not yours) or they may need to set the bbl back a turn
and rechamber

you go polishing and they may void any liability

Bob, I do plan on keeping the rifle but really don't want to send it back. It took over 7 months and a bunch of broken promises to get the rifle back. I also plan on rechambering with a new krieger in the near future. The rifle shoots great at least. Maybe I can polish it out myself, I just wonder if JB paste is aggressive enough to remove the scratches.

If you take your time, you really have nothing to loose, assuming that it is unsatisfactory as is. I think that IOSSO is a bit sharper (although finer) than JB. Without a lathe, it will be tricky. Do you know someone who has one?

Thanks, I think I will try the IOSSO. Maybe I'll put it on the outside of a modified case. I don't know anyone with a lathe.

Waterfowler,

if you do not have a lathe, Boyd being right, then the next best thing you can do is to get a tight fitting rod guide, put the rod through it, attach a fired case to it- coat the case with polish and use the case to center the effort.

That's what I'm going to do. Hopefully it works. I should not have to do this though, I wonder how it was scratched to begin with.

I had the same situation with a brand new rifle one time. The first three cases came out badly scratched. I was astonished at what I saw when I bore-scoped it. I could have knocked off the high edges of the gouges in the chamber and that would have stopped it scratching the brass, but I was concerned that each case I fired in that chamber would have brass forced into the scratches, ruining my cases, so I sent it back to the factory. They re-barreled it.

You say it has a scratch. Is it a ring or a radial scratch or groove? If it is I doubt that you will be able to lap it out.

Butch is correct. If he rolled a chip while chambering it's not going to polish out (ask me how I know, lol). Chambers with minimum taper can require a serious setback to remove radial imperfections.

I'll be interested to see if Mr Moreo admits to and corrects the error. He doesn't have a good track record in this area. Rereading the OP, I don't see anything about chamber work. Did I miss something?

I don't know how I would describe the scratches. It was the first time I looked through a bore scope. The guy that looked at it said they were pretty significant.

I didn't have any chambering done, he took the barrel off to polish the action. I have no idea how the chamber was scratched. I'm still waiting for a reply, 2 weeks now.

After waiting 6 months for a custom barrel and then waiting for the “gunsmith” to chamber and build my gun I also had a gouge in the chamber. I sent it back to the smith and he machined .375” off the barrel and rechambered it. I got it back now the barrel isn’t properly indexed so the sights are canted. The morel of that story: if the smith does poor work the first time don’t expect a better job the second time. I use a different gunsmith now.

PS: next time I will polish the scratch myself.

I'm sorry that you had a problem, but a polish job fixes very few like this.

Ain't that the damn truth.

I had a top of the line Kreiger fitted to an XR-100 action by a ""Big name" gunsmith. When it was returned, the lug was so far off that the action could not go into a stock.

And the muzzle was so butchered by the smith, as to make the gun unshootable.

The crown is in some bazaar configuration and was cut with a dull cutter, so there is a roll of steel that folded over INTO the bore.

When I called him about the lug and crown, he said to send it back, and I replied, "You're kidding, right?"

Maybe he is sooooooo good that he has a helper do the boring stuff, but he is still responsible for what leaves the shop.
