I too drank heavily from the scout kool-aid well! 20+ years ago I did one up on a trued 700 action, Shaw barrel, B-Square made a scout mount for the 700s back then... I still have that rig but it currently wears a 2-7 Leupold on a conventional mount (it still has the Ching Sling on it though). I still run Leupold 2.5 LER/Scout scopes on two lever-pseudo scouts (a 336 in .30-30 & 1895GS in .45/70). Tried a 1.5-4 Leupold LER on a 1894 in .44 but didn't like the weight/balance of the rig. I also have an M1A scout squad with a 2.5 Leupold LER on it.
My eyes were never good & they've worsened over the years, after the bi-focals, I can't see irons well & the 2.5x's aren't what they used to be. I don't go past 300 yards with the M1A. In the past 4-5 years, I've subscribed to the "practical-rifle" concept (similar to the scout in weight & length but with a conventional mounted low magnification variable). My deer rig is a 77/44 with an old 1.5-4 Leupold shotgun /muzzleloader scope (I'm in IA, straight-wall only). My current replacement for a scout rifle is my Tikka T3X lite .308 chopped to 20" with a Leupold 1.5-4 IR Hog plex 30 mm tube. It works rather nicely for my tired eyes.
