Scotty Kilmer/carbon removal

I've been watching some of his videos about cars and he mentions that there's 2 types of carbon buildup in cars, on the combustion side and the oil (?) side. He has shown 2 different products which seem to work at cleaning carbon out. I'll have to watch again to get the names.

Anyhoo, has anyone seen his videos? Would those products have any merit to clean carbon in barrels. I know there's all sorts of products for gun cleaning to stuff like CLR but I'm intrigued by his findings and if it would work in gun barrels. The names mentioned didn't sound familiar from other stuff I've seen posted on the many carbon threads but I'm probably wrong. Anybody?

Yea, I've seen one of his videos ... flailing hands and all.

I'm not going to watch another one, can tell us what products he's talking about?

Breaking a new year resolution, I can't resist responding.

Why create a solution to a problem that does not exist? There are plenty of very good FIREARM specific solvents on the market that do an excellent job on removing carbon. There is no need to go into the "weeds" on this issue.

A brass brush and a hot barrel with about any solvent will take carbony out, or a soak time then brass brush, I cleaned a AR barrel that was terrible with brass brush and hoppers, took it down to the metal it took a few strokes and it was black goo engineer style, could've hatched a Xenomorph

Carbon in a car engine and carbon in a barrel are not the same.
There is NO cleaner that you can buy the will remove hard carbon without mechanical
abrasion.
This∆. In my days at the dealership, the direct injected gasoline engines could/would get some nasty hard carbon on the valves. So much so, it would cause a no start/stall. The only remedy was to remove the heads and physically remove the carbon. I kinda miss the 3.6 direct injection carbon cleaning and timing chains and 6 speed 3-5-R wave plate....NOT!!

Same here! There isn't a chemical made that will take hard carbon off the back of valves. With Direct Injection, BMW came up with a Walnut shell media blaster that goes on the head once the intake is removed. Several others have adopted this approach. The carbon in the throat could be a close second if left neglected I guess. As stated above, plenty of great chemicals out there to get carbon out of the barrel.

I really like sea foam
Top engine cleaner for general gun cleaning. Deep creep is also really awesome. Both are recommended for guns by manufacturer

I'm using stuff that will not damage all the things associated with the barrel s stocks, benches, rods ...

This stuff works very well.......

I own 4 borescopes plus a broken one
Your very good point is one that is largely overlooked. IMO powder fouling changes rather quickly into something that is a lot harder to remove. Even if you don't clean immediately, putting something like kroil in the bore right immediately after you fire your last round can make all the difference. You just need a way to keep it in the bore and not all over your case, or in your bedding.

As the years keep going by faster, I try to keep a open mind to advances in our sport. Most solvents and a brush have worked to remove carbon. I don't worry about copper much. If what we have works, why do we think we need a different process to get the same result......
