Scopes

Needing so me advice on variable scopes: NF, IOR, Schmidt & Bender - which use Schott glass and is this glass really better than the other types and if so why? I can't seem to find a comparison of these scopes. I know its not apples to apples however I don't want apples to watermelons either.
Thanks

Several years ago, I shot a lot of 22 rimfire bench rest and started off with a Weaver T-36. I thought it was really good until I shot a friends rifle with a NF. Immediately sold the Weaver and bought a NF.

Even though I don't shoot bench rest any longer, I still have 3 NF scopes. There are better scopes on the market for sure, but for the money the NF is great for me.

Perhaps if you told us a little bit about what rifle you're going to put the scope on and what kind of shooting you will be doing, we can come up with clever suggestions or thoughts.

Rem 700 22.250 and soon a 3BR 100-300 yards. Also PRS with RPR 6.5 Creedmoor. The 22.250 still some life in it (5 shots 1 hole) so I am not quite ready for the 30BR. My eyes need more power than the 6x24 that I have now (Viper PST FFP 6x24).

For PRS, you probably want an FFP with a tree type reticle, correct? The PRS crowd usually does not go above 20-some X. March has a new 4.5-28X52 with nice tree reticle. But they also have a 5-42X56 also with a tree reticle. Both are FFP and mil/mil. They are a little pricey $$$

I personally use a March-X 10-60X56 running at 50X for F-class. That's an SFP with moa/moa. The other brans you mention are fine too.

Schott optical glass is special because it cast as ingot and while it is still molten it is inserted in a vacuum oven to draw out any gases. These micro bubbles of gas if nit removed will cause inclusions in the glass which in turn will cause aberrations/distortions, which in turn diminishes the the amount of light coming through the optical lenses. After the glass ingot is cooled a diamond edged hole saw is used to cut out a rod of the glass from the ingot and then rods of glass are cut up into disks that are ground to what ever lens shape is called for that optics formula. I learned of Schott glass from my days of photography using B+W German made lens filters that are made Schott glass and they are very expensive compared to lesser priced/quality brands.

Some of the newer scopes are real fine without Schott glass..when
you chose the ones with ED glass. Schmidt & Bender was advertised as Schott glass and its a fine optic,
but there are so many different Applications and Great Scopes for them all...It really comes down to the prescription in your set of eye balls that matters most...
I like my NF-Comp but prefer the Sightron for my eyes in F-Class
I suggest you look through them before you purchase or by used on this forum cause you may
be the next seller....just my2c
