Scope suggestions for the CMP's New AR Tactical Rifle(Long Range) Class?

I'm looking for a scope to put on a 6x45mm AR to shoot the CMP's new AR Tactical Rifle Long Range Class (1000 yards on F-Class Targets). The CMP & NRA Class Rules restrict magnification to 15X max. However, the CMP Class Rules allow for MD to dial & tape the magnification @ 15X or less. The rifle will also be used at NRA Matches ( NRA rules have no provision for taping of the adjustment).

We're currently looking at the following scopes:
  • Arken SH-4 4-14x44 FFP
  • SWFA SS 3-15x42 FFP
  • Primary Arms 4-14X44 FFP-R-GRID-2B.
My 17 year old son (Dylan) is currently using a SWFA SS 10x42 MQ in NRA Tactial Rifle AR (Mid-Range Prone) on a .223 WOA Barreled AR and is very happy with it at 600 yards(He won the 2020 TSRA Mid-Range Championship).....it just won't be enough for 1000 yards.

Any thoughts, Recommendations (and Discount Codes) are appreciated.

Vortex PST GEN II 3-15x44 variety of reticles also FFP or 2nd FP. Run 8-$900. Eurooptic is showing 14% off til the end of November for Vortex.

Andy, please educate me a little. What does it mean to tape the magnification, and what is your abbreviation MD?

Hi 6ShotOr5,

MD=Match Director

This is a New Class for the CMP. Quoted from CMP High Power Rule 4.1.19 AR Tactical Rifle "Any sights are permitted; optical sights may not exceed 15X; if a variable scope is used its magnification may be taped at 15X or less".

The NRA High Power Mid-Range Prone Tactical Rifle(AR) Rules have been provisional for the past couple years. I have heard of Match Directors(MD's) allowing greater than 15X scopes as long as they were dialed down. There currently are no NRA National Records allowed and the NRA Rules do not address "Dialing Down".

Thank You for Your Input,
.....Andy Legg

FWIW... I think this used to be 'allowed' in other sports, such as Hunter Benchrest (limit of 6x magnification) as reality (most actual 'hunters' were already using something more, like a 3-9x) marched on past the rules.

Given the somewhat arbitrary limit of 15x, something like this seems reasonable. I get the 'reason' for the limit on the magnification, but if a person has a 4-16x scope, or a 3-18x, they can't come out and play? Or they get automagically bumped to F-class, with the purpose-built bolt guns and 40-50x scopes? That seems silly...

While there may be some hiccups as far as implementation... I think the CMP did the right thing by spelling this out.

I don't have answers yet but I think it's an interesting question.
I 'm going to try one of my 1/8th click 10-50 sightrons dialed down to 15x.
That may be stretching the 'tactical' intent of the class.

fwiw - I still doubt that cmp long range tactical is really going to be on f-class targets while their midrange tactical is on sling targets. I think they fix a typo eventually.

CMP has this in rimfire sporter now. variables can be taped at 6x.

a second focal plane would be the best for that class

March has a brand 1.5x15x40 purposely made for AR Tactical. I have one in the house, I can take some pictures and post them .
It's actually a 1.5-15X42. I have one installed on my AR-10, which I use for just that purpose. It is an SFP and mine has the excellent MTR-5 reticle, the same on I have in my March-X 10-60X56 on my F-TR match rifle.

It has a side focus and I like the fast-lever on mine. Not that I use it in competition as I keep it pegged at 15X. I also installed a bigger focus wheel on the side knob; makes for more granular focus\ control.

I agree that it's likely a typo...but it also could be intentional. Maybe logistical issue....I don't know if F-Class targets are all they plan on shooting that day. Either way as long as everyone in the AR Tactical Class is shooting the same target....it's all good (with me). IDK

I couldn't pass up the Back Friday/Cyber Monday deal($200) on the Primary Arms 4-14 R-Grid 2B. I have used one of these before. It is FFP but has a fine dot located 1/2 Mil below the Chevron aim point ( I dialed down .5 Mil's and use the dot as the Point of Aim).

I'm still interested in opinions for better options....just couldn't pass up a good buy (even if I don't use it on the 6mm-223).

Thanks Again,
..Andy:)
