scope ?????'s

Considering buying a used Leupold VXIII 6.5-20 x40 scope with target knobs, fine cross-hair and dot. Plan on shooting paper and varmints out to about 500 yards. Anyone had good or bad experiences on the scope. Please let me know.

I've used one for my any/any target scope for the last 3 years and haven't had any issues with it. I think you'll like it.

I have one as well. It was the first Leupold I ever bought. I've had it close to 15yr now. Haven't had not one problem with it. I have used it on a 300 win mag. , 257 Web. Mag, 308 win, and 220 swift. No telling how many rounds have been fired useing this scope. It still tracks perfect, and after much abuse from heavy recoiling mags, as well being draged in an out of a truck and threw the woods and fields!

I've always had the feeling that the 6.5-20x Leupold was one of their best offerings for optical quality, tracking, repeatebility, durability, etc., and all the above positive posts confirm that. The true lifetime warranty is more icing on the cake. The second one I bought used from a friend who got the hots for another scope that was being hyped at the time has often told me how he now regrets having sold the Leupold, and if I ever want to sell it, he'd like the first opportunity to buy it back. ;)

I agree with Frank! As far as hunting, and shooting paper for fun. It is the best scope for the money! I have a Mark 4 8.5x25x50 with the tmr recticle. It is a nice scope and it is just a bit more clear than the vxIII. Even tho once past 300yrds. on hot summer days I have to back the power down to 20 to get mirage under control. I actualy can't justify the difference in price unless it's just perfect conditions for shooting, and those days are far few and between.

There are different models of that scope depending on when it was made. Mine were Vari-xIII and I had 6 or 7 of the 6.5-20 back in the 80's to mid 90's. There were things I didn't like. Some came with target knobs, a couple were sent to Leupold and Premier to have them installed. None of them had clicks that were 1/4", more like 5/16 or 3/8" or whatever it happened to be. Don't know if that's been remedied or not. Eye relief changes a lot with when you zoom - more than other scopes - and I didn't like that either. Also adjustments didn't always repeat. Dial an inch or two elevation and click back down, sometimes the reticle would stay. A few years back shooting chucks with a friend, I watched him crank in elevation for a shot, then crank back down for a close in shot and miss high.....the scope hadn't returned. This was an almost new 6.5-20. Something touted as the "best" should never do that, not ever. Lots of people think Leupolds are great and that's fine....their money, their choice. By the mid 90's I'd sold all mine and wouldn't buy another one. I think there's better and at less cost.

Richard,
I have three in a 1" tube and four in the 30mm tube, no complaints I don't have the dot mine are all fine cross hairs. my 16 yr old son has a 6.5-20 w/30mm tube on his .300wm 190smk has it zeroed @ 200yds he shoots our 1081yd gong all the time and re-zeros right on the money.
