Scope Rings and mounts for AR-15

I am working on mounting a Sightron Slll 8-32x56mm scope to a .223 DPMS Bull 24" flat top. Can someone suggest a good set of rings (one piece or two piece)? Should I go with a higher ring or use a rail mount riser? Should I consider using a a tapered riser, and how much taper? I would like to shoot as far as is practical for this rifle.

I do not have unlimited funds, but I also only want to do this once.

Thanks for your suggestions.

dec: I can't comment on rail mount risers or tapered bases, but would suggest you consider the Burris Signature Zee rings. Never any ring marks on the scope tube, and the ability of using the off-set inserts, in your case to gain needed "up" adjustment. With .020" off-sets in both the front and rear rings you will gain a lot of up adjustment, maybe even enough that a tapered base would not be required.

Second Frank's recommendation. By doing a little math and using the right inserts, you can compensate for any scope offset, vertical and horizontal, and keep the adjustments in the middle of the range. I use them for both 1" and 30mm scopes. The 1" come in medium and high and the 30mm are available in medium, high and extra high.

Find you a good rail extension and put it on the rifle first. This is if you don't have a forend that allows you to move the scope forward. The AR for most scopes have limited forward movement so the rear of the scope is too close to the shooter. End up with a poor cheek weld and inconsistent accuracy. 6mmAR.com sells one that works.

Get one of the one piece mounts........

I tried a riser with different rings, I tried 2 sets of "high rings", Hell I tried all kinds of combos of rings and risers. I never liked the way anything looked and I could never get the scope far enough forward.

I bought an Armalite mount, I am very happy with it. It is rock solid and the scope is where it needs to be, The eye piece is right even with the charging handle. That is perfect with an A 2 style butt stock.

As for a "canted mount", No need on an AR. My rifle has a 16" bull barrel and I can hit regulation sized steel Silhouettes at 500 meters using my mil dots. The rifle is zeroed at 100 yards, From 0 to 300 yards I'm within minute of varmint without any hold over or turret adjustment. Your rifle will be a little flatter shooting with the gain in velocity from the longer barrel. Still, 500 yards is about max for your rig.

This Scout Rail is the Ticket. Raises the scope .5 inches

These rings in med height are what you'll need.

On most AR's Flat Tops you'll need at least 1.4 inches in height for the
for you to see out the scope. Rings alone are
usually too low and its hard to get the scope foward enough.

Your scope has enough internal adjustment to make 500 Yards

I like the ggandg rails. I used one of the along with the burris extreme mediums on one build for a total rise of 1 inch and it worked just fine for me. I have also used the burris p.e.p.r. one piece and don't have any complaints about them. They are cheap and effective. There are plenty of one piece mounts out there specifically for mounting to an AR flat top. Some are very expensive some are not. I liked the looks of the Wilson Combat but I never have seen one in person.

The RRA scope mount is similar to the Armalite and costs a lot less. It has worked for me well over the years.

Here is my AR. GG&G scope rail and Burris Signature Zee high rings. Scope is a Tasco, but just for reference ... it is a 44mm Obj, and is 17" long. I think with setup, you'd be very well setup on S3.
