Scope ring lapping

I am ready to get a scope ring lapping Kit. I have looked at the Wheeler kit with the alignment pins and bar and some others with just the lapping bar. Are the pins important? I understand they show you how far the rings are off but if you are going to lap them anyway what is the difference?

The difference is that they got to sell you something else. I lap everything that does not have plastic inserts. In the past, I have combined lapping and bedding.

But wouldn't the alignment pins be a good tool to make sure that the scope mounts were at least "close" before grinding away?

That said, I don't lap anything. I've "blued" all my mounts and found them to be as true as necessary for my needs. Better be for the prices I've been charged 8)

If you take a couple of passes with a charge lapping bar, you can see, by where it is cutting, how the rings are aligned. I really don't believe that any set of rings that I have put a bar in, were close enough for me, and that takes in quite a few different rifles and types of rings. Standards vary.

I've used the Wheeler. Just the lapping bar. I didn't use the points. Although I got satisfactory results, I think the compound that Wheeler includes is a bit more aggressive than I like.
