Scope Ring Alignment

Mounted a scope on a used rig I recently bought. Davidson bases, Kelbly 1" rings on an RFD action. Scope is a Leupold. When I snug down the cap screws on the scope rings I noticed that the cross hairs are slightly distorted from what they look like when the scope is not mounted. Could this mean that the scope rings need lapping in order to align properly?

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks, shcal

Thats kind of scary--lapping of course, is a good idea.

also try moving the rings fore and aft-- so they clamp down on a different part of the scope tube, you might be binding something inside)

never seen this before
