Scope recital that simulates iron sights

I think PW hit the nail on the head with an IR scope. However, it would not be legal equipment in either smallbore or XTC. I'm thinking it would be in f-class though.
There is nothing in the 2024 rulebooks for NRA F-class, NRA smallbore, ARA, or IR50/50 that prohibit an illuminated reticle. All are available on line. Can't speak to XTC

No, but a scope with illuminated reticle can help with that problem. I absolutely love my Trijicon Ten Mile 5-50x56. There are serviceable but less expensive options like the Barska 10-40x50 IR SWAT as well.
I have a Trijicon Ten Mile 5-50x56 on a centre fire {280AI} that is the only "illuminated" scope that I own {I have two others, Leopold & March} that has enough illumination to be useful in daylight hours...
The others are good in low light situations and my Leopold is on my hunting rifle and works a treat early morning and twilight but is a non player during the day.
The same for my March Majesta and it has several levels of illumination like the Trijicon but even at max it only makes the reticle a bit darker in full daylight but does not turn it visually red...
The Trijicon also lets you choose between Red or Green. Value for money when compared against lots of other options.
The March Majesta does offer a reticle (MTR-WFD) that has both a dot in the middle but also surrounding rings that let you frame a bullseye and is especially useful in F Open competition where mirage is a factor.
Hope the info helps... I hear you about the eyes... It's why I have been spending more $ for ever better quality scopes as the years roll by...

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
Lest we Forget..."

I am transitioning from high power XTC to smallbore prone due to age and eyesight.

I have been shooting XTC with a scope for several years but have difficulty seeing the black dot reticle on the black target, So I have found that the "ring" reticle that simulates an aperture front sight is much easier to shoot and I get good results. So, I plan to use this type of reticle for smallbore prone.

Do any of you smallbore prone shooters use a scope with a "ring" reticle for the smallbore prone discipline?
I have long thought that a circle, or a circle within a circle, would be the ideal reticle for indoor ARA, but that target is mostly white. I think out door, the constant small changes in POA for weather conditions would take some getting used to.

There are a couple of custom reticle makers on the web, but I am long past the limit of what I can spend on this addiction, and I'm guessing they are expensive.. You might try them...let me know.

Deion did make, or still does make a small circle with a center dot in thier high magnification scopes.. It may be too small for your purposes.

It just seems that aligning two circles is much easier and faster for the human eye. 20+ years ago, I shot my best group ever with aperture sights from the bench. I probably could not hit the target with aperture sights today.

Good luck, and let me know if you find something.

Nothing prohibiting them in xtc. A couple of the SR specific scopes actually have illuminated dots

Thanks for the reply and thank you for your generous offer for the loan of the scope.

Let me clarify my question. I am looking for comments by others who have used a ring reticle for smallbore prone, how do they like it, why did they choose it, which one are they using, etc.

I have bought the Anschutz KK-50 and have just started using it and it seems to be working ok but I am interested in the experience of others. Also it might be inopportunity for others who have trouble seeing a black reticle on a black target to learn from this thread.

Did you try the KK-50?

Thanks again for your reply.
Best wishes.
I had one of the Anschutz scopes. I found the reticle to be OK, but found myself wanting more magnification. I’ve found that the Leupold 6.5-20 or 8.5-25 scopes with the 3/8 or Silhouette dot are my preference. The 1/8 dot is great, but on darker days I found it washing out against the black and eye strain was bad trying to see the dot. I like the dot as I find I focus on a single point where crosshairs had be looking at vertical and horizontal lines. I still prefer iron sights, but the dot has done well.

I have now shot several smallbore prone 50 yard A23/5 targets on various days with the Anschutz KK-50 scope with the "ring" reticle. My scores are comparable with the scores shot previously when my eyesight allowed me to use the Leupold 1/8 MOA target dot reticle.

It was fun to see the small dot reticle inside the X ring as I broke the shot but as it turns out not as important as the other fundamentals of a good shot. I have found that the ring reticle will deliver similar scores when all of the other fundamentals of precision marksmanship are followed, just like iron sights with aperture sights.

The sight picture with the KK-50 reticle looks optimum at 9X which gives the proper ring of light between the bull and the ring. The only issue is that it is more difficult to see bullet holes at 9X than I was experiencing at 25X with the 1/8 dot reticle. Getting instant feedback with being able to see the bullet hole is a big advantage of shooting with a scope.

Thanks to all who replied with recommendations and encouragements. Hopefully others will benefit from this post.

Best wishes to all
Clyde

I have a scope with a German #4 reticle, sight it in using a "balance the ball" hold and it can be extremely accurate. Also easy to see under all conditions
