Scope recital that simulates iron sights

I am transitioning from high power XTC to smallbore prone due to age and eyesight.

I have been shooting XTC with a scope for several years but have difficulty seeing the black dot reticle on the black target, So I have found that the "ring" reticle that simulates an aperture front sight is much easier to shoot and I get good results. So, I plan to use this type of reticle for smallbore prone.

Do any of you smallbore prone shooters use a scope with a "ring" reticle for the smallbore prone discipline?

No, but a scope with illuminated reticle can help with that problem. I absolutely love my Trijicon Ten Mile 5-50x56. There are serviceable but less expensive options like the Barska 10-40x50 IR SWAT as well.

I think PW hit the nail on the head with an IR scope. However, it would not be legal equipment in either smallbore or XTC. I'm thinking it would be in f-class though.

Sightron has great scopes for your needs ?

I have a 8x32X56 PLR Lum on a .22 Rim for Bench
And F/Class works well for me?

There is one, a good friend (Dan Altman) uses a scope with an 8 minute ring in it for smallbore prone.

I will try to contact him to get a manufacturers name, and if there are ring size / power options.

My apologies, but a quick search didn't find what I was looking for (or what I have seen Dan using at our matches).

In xtc I liked either Vortex pst scope with illuminated dot or the nightforce with the sr2 reticle which had the circle the size of the black for the same reason you state
That said if magnification is not limited to 4x
The not seeing the dot against the black is not an issue with higher power

Thanks, I would appreciate the information.
Also I would appreciate knowing why he chose the ring reticle.

If you go to Leupold 's shop by reticle page you will find some ring reticles, some with moa ring, some with service target bull size rings. The ones I have seen so far are in the fire dot series and appear intended for service rifles, offered only in 1-4.5X magnification. But I didn't go all the way through, so consider it a starting point.

The Anschutz KK-50 4-12 has only an aperature. I have one I am not using if you want to try it send me a pm.
Thanks for the reply and thank you for your generous offer for the loan of the scope.

Let me clarify my question. I am looking for comments by others who have used a ring reticle for smallbore prone, how do they like it, why did they choose it, which one are they using, etc.

I have bought the Anschutz KK-50 and have just started using it and it seems to be working ok but I am interested in the experience of others. Also it might be inopportunity for others who have trouble seeing a black reticle on a black target to learn from this thread.

Did you try the KK-50?

Thanks again for your reply.
Best wishes.

It sounds like an option worth considering for anyone who is having trouble seeing a black reticle on the black target like I am.

I used the KK-50 on my air rifle for offhand practice. I decided the reticle was working fine, but was too different from the dot I normally use to be good for practice.

I've used [tried to] the KK50 for XTC. I found the ring to be too big compared to aperture iron sights. I.e., I can't focus on the whole ring like I could with a rear aperture sight.

It did not occur to me that an illuminated reticle would not be legal for XTC or Smallbore prone. I need to check the rule book, do you have a reference that would get me started? As of now it is not an issue but if that turns out to be a good solution to the seeing problem it would be good to know the rules.

I have not been involved in competive shooting for a number of years. Scopes were not legal when I was. Only a single lense was. The rule books I have define telescopic sight in section 3.7.

Look at the Maven line of scopes. I shoot the 5 X 30 with illuminated center dot.
the dot is perfect for small bore target
