Scope power needed for 1000yds??

I'm building a 6.5-284 on a Nesika action for 600-1000yd competition at Williamsport.
I have almost all the components but not the scope--
I've heard that you need a variable power scope to reduce power when there is mirage- but what is the best MAX power? Seems like Leupolds,25x) do as well as Nightforce,42x)at Williamsport- and cost less.
What powers do most guys use for 600-1000?
Thanks,
Bob

Do your self a favor.Go to a williamsport match.Look through a bunch of different scopes that are set up on the line.99 percent of the shooters there will let you if you ask.And pick the right one for you.I shoot a 6-20 a 6-24 a 24 and a 36 there. They all work

I've used 6.5-20 Leupolds, 8.5-25 Leupolds,1" and 30mm tubes) and 12-42 Nightforce. Currently a 12-42 BR Nightforce resides on my 6.5 X 284 built on,of all things) a Nesika action. I don't plan on using anything else.

A zoom can be very useful when conditions are particularily bad, haze, mirage etc. Having the ability to dial back the power a little bit can decrease the impact on the image a little bit.

There are those folks who have had issues with Leupolds, but I've been lucky, all of mine have been fine. The Nightforce has been good also, very repeatable clicks and it holds zero with no problem. And that is more important than image quality any day. For a lot less money I'd say look at a Sightron, the folks I know that use them have been very happy with clicks and holding zero.

Listen to boyd - you can see everything at W-port. I have shot from 18x to 50x at 1000yds.20-25 is a good comprmise and allows you to catch your trace and windflags in the FOV

36+ will not, but gets you a "closer" view of the target.

Currently I run a 40x leupy and 42x NF.

I shot boyd's 20x the other week...no problem there either.

YMMV,
JB
