Scope pet peeve

Funny I use a 34mm. 42 oz. scope on Harrells aluminum rings and it never moves in fact that set up placed in the World open and and at the GBA national...... jim

I have probably a dozen sets of steel Badger rings going, and one three screw Badger alloy set. I’d be in a lot of trouble here clamping them adjacent to each other if they didn’t align. And it’s two numbered sets. All my Badger and as many Nightforce rings have been spot on without lapping fortunately, but can leave marks.

I simply cannot see relying on insert or any less robust rings, on very heavy scope applications, - or on a this shot really matters arm’s reach rifle, like an FNH SPR. Yes, Badger rings would certainly reduce the diameter of your tube if you get carried away but that is because the screws and all threading are made to last. My only complaint is they will surface rust as sold, but not with cerakote.

Jim, if you don’t have a weight limit, why not have a greater margin before things don’t work, than a thinner one? Scope bells bounce up and down under recoil, as seen in slow motion videos, and are always subject to being bumped. I try to hold them firmly, close to the ends, and spread out the contact. I use alloy rings when I have to which is always in F-Class, but steel when I can.

That looks super solid.

While I lap my rings, and have experienced no ring marks on new scopes I have bought, I have bought many scopes over 69 years of shooting with ring marks on them. This does not upset me one iota. It has not affected the accuracy of any of these scopes and accuracy is all I care about where scopes are concerned.

The way to obtain a scope without ring marks, is to buy it new.

Or do it right and deburr the sharp edges and corners and either lap them or bed them and the base then torque them to the right value ...... jim
