Scope moving in rings

Savage .308,sightron 30mm tube, leupold rings, noticed it' moved less than 1/4 inch, screws are still tight, any ideas on how to fix it without getting different rings?20180513_073737.jpg

Were the rings lapped? Aggressive lapping can result in an inside diameter too large to reliably hold the tube. If the ring screws are properly torqued, the scope should not be sliding around on you.

I ask that question because there seems to be little or no gap between the ring halves in your photo and I don't know what the other side looks like.

Best idea is to lap and bed the rings, but I have used tape temporarily when in a hurry. Only tape I would recommend is "hockey stick" tape.

This is my theory, and valid only if the top and bottom halves do NOT make hard contact with each other.

When you assembled the whole shebang, you had slight mis-alignment of the rings in the bases. You tightened the screws what you considered a sensible torque so as not to damage the scope tube.

THEN, after a period of shooting and recoil, the rings aligned themselves in the bases and you now have "slop". (a technical word for too much clearance)

Hopefully proper alignment and re-torquing will solve the problem. I hate the thought that either Leupold rings, or Sightron scope tubes could be incorrect in diameter. jd

So Burris signature rings with insert will fix my problem?

Yes and you'll never have a ring mark.

Leupold rings are junk. Ive seen Leupold rings fail on more than one occasion. But no ring contact is even close to perfect without lapping an bedding.

Roger that! I had a few pair on here for sale and couldn't give them away.

Blame it on junk rings or whatever I say the rings were not torqued properly. If there’s clearance between the bottom and top ring halves
no steel rings in the world would allow the scope to move in that way. Not saying that
that Jose or OP (NOT JIM!)doesn’t know what he’s doing I just can’t see any other reason unless the scope tube has swaged in the rings.
