Scope mounts for target Mod. 70?

I'm having a problem finding scope mounts. I have a ca. 1980-ish Winchester Target Model 70 .308 (s/n G1380XXX). As I understand it, this is one of the last batch of Mod 70s to leave the factory with guides for a stripper clip. I used to shoot across-the-course NMC but more recently I've shoot F-TR with this gun. I had been using an old Burris 12X scope with Weaver mounts and bases (#46 & 49A), with a thin brass shim under the rear mount to give about 20 MOA of elevation. I recently purchased a Vortex 6.5-20X44 (30mm tube) to replace the Burris and have been looking for new mounts. I had hoped to find a base or bases that have about 20 MOA of elevation built in. I assume that my use of a shim under the rear mount puts undesired torque on the scope and I'd like to avoid this. I was recommended to check E.G.W.'s mounts but E.G.W. gave up, describing my rifle as "one of the odd model 70s". The screw hole spacings on the top of the receiver, measured from the front hole are: ~0.8666", ~5.063" & ~5.507".

Suggestion appreciated.

I think you can use a standard M70 20 MOA base. All M70 front receiver ring holes are a nominal .860 spacing and I'm thinking that the rear hole in the bridge on the target model is in the same place as the standard M70 receiver. It's been awhile since I've had one of those, so can't be sure, but I think they only moved the front hole back some for the clip slot. You could use only 3 screws or you could drill and counterbore another hole in the base to match the receiver. You could put a #47 base (one for the standard M70 receiver) on top of your bridge and see if you have enough room for an extra hole without running into the existing one. You could even lay your #46 base on the rear bridge and tell, as both the the 46 and 47 have the same .860 hole spacing, just different contours on the bottom.

Why don't you keep the bases you have & install Burris 30mm Signature Zee rings with inserts to get ~20MOA effect?

I believe I have a used one in my storage building. Just took it off an Express length pre64 375 to build a 416 Rem Mag. I'll check later today.

Don't know why not. I was looking at Burris' website and see how the Zee rings with the inserts could fix the issue of torque on the tube from shimming the rear base but I don't understand how it, "Makes expensive tapered bases or shimming for thousand-yard shooting a thing of the past" It seems to me that the inserts just correct any misalignment between the two rings but then I've never actually held them in my hands.

I might have some desire to use a standard Picatinny rail spacing so that the scope could also be used on another rifle but this is not a primary concern.

P.S. Looking at the Burris' catalog, I think I understand now that the Zee rings come with two sets of inserts. One set has a 0.01" offset.

Because you put one insert up and one down to make the scope like a tapered base. I believe they come in different amounts of offset. Matt
