Scope mount with/without picatinny rail

I’ve got a Savage Model 10 and want to mount a 34mm main tube scope. Better to mount the rings to the picatinny rail or directly to the gun? I will be using it for hunting and I want the scope to be as low as possible. Ideas? And what brand are guys liking?

Hi,
depends on the size of your objective lens. I run a rail, and low QD scope rings. Which in terms of main tube centre line height, is the same (essentially) as running medium height rings directly attached to the receiver. I like the rail, as I can remove the scope for transport, cleaning, easy to fit a different scope in a second set of rings, it also gives flexibility as to where to position your scope(s).
cheers

Anyone else have some mount options? I’ve got a S&B 5-25x56 PMII going on a Savage Model 10 GRS. I want the scope to be as low as possible and I would prefer to mount directly to the receiver. I talked to S&B and they said 1” height with a picatinny rail, 1.4” without the rail. I have always used DNZ mounts and love them but those height requirements are not an option from them. Ideas?
