I currently have Leupold one piece base and standard rings on my 40XBR, but wondering if I should replace them with a rail or something else? Not a big fan of the windage rear base. This setup came with the rifle when I bought it.
Yeah, most likely will switch to picatinny and a good set of rings. Doesn't look like Seekins make 1" anymore though.
Seekins rail has that also.Go with the MDT rail.
it has the recoil shoulder on the front,
While the old style Leupold base and rings are not the most popular these days, Ive never had an issue with them. The rings can be overtightened, but other than that I don't think I would change them for the difference. Why fix something that isn't broken? I've got a bunch of them in the ring and base box and was thinking I should plan on using them for something.
Well Burris Signature rings with inserts are adjustable for alignment. Not quite automatic....Yes on the Picatinny rail. Those things are the way to go. My favorite, and I think the best, is Hank's precision......but the Rem short action / 0 degree / for 6-48 screws has been unavailable for many months. The EGW works fine. And absolutely use Burris Signature Zee rings, either 1" or 30mm, I don't use anything else.No ring marks and perfect alignment automatically.
Those inserts self adjust for perfect alignment. Clamp them down and that's it, Only "adjustment" is changing the insert thickness for height or windage.Well Burris Signature rings with inserts are adjustable for alignment. Not quite automatic....
I use them too.
And you can take a 20moa rail and reduce it back to close to zero MOA.Those inserts self adjust for perfect alignment. Clamp them down and that's it, Only "adjustment" is changing the insert thickness for height or windage.
What he said,Seekins Rings, or Warne Rings or Nightforce Ringshttps://seekinsprecision.com/scope-rings-2.html
If you go with the picattanny rail, I would recommend these rings. Not sure if they still make one inch rings anymore though.
Ideally you don't want anything applying stress to the actionSteel or aluminum makes no difference as long as they are quality. You will see no difference in performance.
Ideally you don't want anything applying stress to the action
One reason we bed rifles, stress free securement to the stock
Something the size/length of a scope base- with 2x the expansion ratio of steel when it heats up
can apply even the slightest amount of stress to the top of the action.
Even drilling one small 6-48 threaded hole in an action, causes the action to react/stress/flex differently.
----------------
When steel is available, I see no reason to use Aluminum for a base
Especially when some peoples Aluminum is different than others.
----------------
This may not make much difference to someones hunting rifle
But may show in the 0.100" range on a competetive rifle causing a guy to chase his tail
or thinking it is barrel wander
