Scope mount opinions

I currently have Leupold one piece base and standard rings on my 40XBR, but wondering if I should replace them with a rail or something else? Not a big fan of the windage rear base. This setup came with the rifle when I bought it.

Yeah, most likely will switch to picatinny and a good set of rings. Doesn't look like Seekins make 1" anymore though.

Vortex Precision Matched Rings are made for them by Seekins and they still offer a 1” set. Their other Pro Series rings aren’t bad either if you wanted to keep price down. Disregard the prices in the link below as they are MSRP so go look for the street prices at vendors.

While the old style Leupold base and rings are not the most popular these days, Ive never had an issue with them. The rings can be overtightened, but other than that I don't think I would change them for the difference. Why fix something that isn't broken? I've got a bunch of them in the ring and base box and was thinking I should plan on using them for something.

I'll be heading out soon to do some loading testing at the range, so will see if the mounts give me any issues before replacing them.

Yes on the Picatinny rail. Those things are the way to go. My favorite, and I think the best, is Hank's precision......but the Rem short action / 0 degree / for 6-48 screws has been unavailable for many months. The EGW works fine. And absolutely use Burris Signature Zee rings, either 1" or 30mm, I don't use anything else.No ring marks and perfect alignment automatically.

Well Burris Signature rings with inserts are adjustable for alignment. Not quite automatic....
I use them too.

Those inserts self adjust for perfect alignment. Clamp them down and that's it, Only "adjustment" is changing the insert thickness for height or windage.

If the scope is optically centered or just close, I used to adjust the windage base to the center or as best as I could visually. Then see if the windage is close enough to adjust with the scope. My thoughts were if it was way out on the target I could fix it with the base. Never once did i need to mess with the base screws. But I did tighten them as tight as I could get them

If you go with the picattanny rail, I would recommend these rings. Not sure if they still make one inch rings anymore though.
What he said,Seekins Rings, or Warne Rings or Nightforce Rings
Nightforce claims, their cnc machining is so ON to the number, you do not need to lap or bed anything.
I like my Nightforce Rings twice as much as my Warnes, they are just nicer made, flawless
Spuhr makes some darn nice units also but pricey
FWIW, the common Weaver USA made 20 MOA rail is fine for an inexpensive unit.
However, if you upgrade, I would recommend going steel base
(Same heat expansion ratio as the action, if that means anything to ya)
CCOP makes steel bases and rings for good prices (Also US Made)
I like my Nightforce steel bases, I started using Nightforce when I could not find Badgers
-------------
I had many rifles set up with the Leupold/Redfield base you shown
There is a usefulness in the windage adjustment there being able to center up your windage dial to the center of its adjustment.
But the ease of swapping scopes with a rail, makes it really nice.

Steel or aluminum makes no difference as long as they are quality. You will see no difference in performance.
Ideally you don't want anything applying stress to the action
One reason we bed rifles, stress free securement to the stock
Something the size/length of a scope base- with 2x the expansion ratio of steel when it heats up
can apply even the slightest amount of stress to the top of the action.
Even drilling one small 6-48 threaded hole in an action, causes the action to react/stress/flex differently.
----------------
When steel is available, I see no reason to use Aluminum for a base
Especially when some peoples Aluminum is different than others.
----------------
This may not make much difference to someones hunting rifle
But may show in the 0.100" range on a competetive rifle causing a guy to chase his tail
or thinking it is barrel wander

Have used both on match rifles in temps from teens to over 100 and no difference shown. It’s a hypothetical fear that doesn’t show up in use on rifles. Use quality of either and you will be fine.
