Scope Magnification

I've shot the 8-32 on my F/open gun for the last 6 years or so. Some days I even have to dial it down around 24ish just to see the target rings due to mirage. My shooting buddys do the same on their NF 15-55. My other target scopes are fixed 36x. With 50-60x its not if, but when you will crossfire in a match, lol! I do like to see the number boards as they also work as mirage boards at my home range.

Perhaps he merely wanted confirmation of the choice he had already made. I go for more magnification myself; and there IS a March 8-80X on one of my Rockchuck rifles for 2025.
I was up to Elmer Keith's house in Salmon one Friday when he was discussing 357 VS 44 Magnum revolvers with a young man. He just said "I can always load my 44 way down to 357 Max loads...".
Yeah, I can always turn that 80X down to 35 or 40X.

an old thread but interesting to read again with peoples scope opinions. most of my life a Leu 8.5x25 was my highest powered scope- i thought it was something but i didnt know what i was missing. the day i tried an NF 8x32 BR the light bulb came on and i could see the target and i was hooked on power. wasnt long before i had an NFbr 12x42 - now i usually shoot a comp 15x55 usually set at 55. But I think I want more —- one of those march 8x80s or big valdatas might be in my future.

And still waiting for the OP to say what type of shooting he is doing. But seeing as he asked in March and never came back I don't think he really cares. LOL
Not to mention the year was 2022. Still other folks get the benefit of the thread so it's all good. At some point or another I'm sure most have the same or similar questions.

There is no benefit if it’s not specific to their shooting needs.

Exactly. If you are shooting a long range steel match a high power scope is a fools errand, as you must spot your misses and adjust accordingly in rapid fashion. You will not do that with high power, or a fine crosshair reticle, and disadvantaged with a sfp. Even 10-12 fixed power is completely adequate for 1000yd steel, more power and you cannot spot misses. Completely different than BR or fclass. Application specific.

Well I read through all the responses and found benefit in them, or maybe I was wrong and don't know my own mind. Thanks for setting me straight. lol

Hey if you are happy then have at it but it wouldn’t help anyone not shooting a sport where you want 80x. You need to know the perimeters of the sport you are shooting before any advice on scope power is useful.

I shoot a sightron 10-50 on 50x at 50 FEET in smallbore f-class indoors.

Yes 50x is worth it over 32 in BR(or f-class) competition, any range.
On 50x most people can't even acquire the target at 50 feet free hand. ;}
