Scope ideas for a break piston airgun

My 3 year old son seems to be getting more interested in shooting. I have an old break-barrel piston air rifle and am looking for a decent scope to put on it as it has a junker on it now. Not trying to beak the bank, just want something in the 3-9x40/50 range. Was looking at the Swift Premier air gun scope. Anyone used one or have a better suggestion? I do have a Nikon M-223 4-12 side focus and an oldLeupold VXII 3-9x40 on hand.
Thanks,

Darrell

At that age, I would start him out with open sights.
You are right. I would, however the air gun I have has no provisions for open sights, it’s a 3/8” dovetail receiver. He does have a Crickett 22 with peep sights. I just had this old air rifle and wanted to set it up with a better scope.

Gamo scopes are tough and cheap but with enought "bounce" a springer will destroy any scope but if its a piston and not n spring powerd rifle the gamo will hold up very well.

Years ago I did some product testing for Nikon. 1000 rounds of .177 pellet's through a break open air rifle. Zero was 50 yards, fired 100 then shot a 5 shot group. Repeated the drill until 1000 pellet's fired. I did this with 2 break open air rifles and 2 Nikon Riflefire specific scopes. No isuues at all and even if someone has a problem the scopes are covered by Nikon's No fault policy. Of course I was smart enough to enlist some buds to make it a competition so that I didn't have to do all the work. I can tell you that you need to clean the barrel about ever 25 shots as some lead residue is left in the barrel. This Nikon scope is the PROSTAFF 3-9 EFR with parallax adjustment. You would be fine with a Rimfire scope with a 50 yard fixed parallax.

I had a RWS 48 22 and an old RWS 45 (unerlever) and both are hard on scopes. I used BSA 2-7 air rifle scopes on them with the RWS mount (which has more screws in it than a swiss watch). I had one scope failure and BSA replaced it no questions. They hold up ok for a scope uner $150. I think mine was $89...

These have adjustable parralax and make decent hunting scopes on 22 as well.

I’ve always used Leupold EFR or Bushnell Elite with AO or side parallax on my springers. Both will handle the double recoil, have a robust warranty, and focus down to 10y.

Straightshooters sells many airguns and has a short list of scopes that they have rated for “heavy” airgun recoil. Worth a look.
