What is a humbler? Coined seemingly by a fellow on snipers hide, it is a completely locked down scope checker fixture. Has been lots of chatter about such beasts that allow you to lock a scope down with zero movement to check tracking precisely. This can also be used to compare resolution and other glass characteristics if more than 1 rail mounted.

That said I am planning to prep a 100 yard area at my house with prone area, concrete bench and also create a humbler with whatever is necessary and i plan to base it on a concrete sonotube pillar with steel/thread threadrod etc sunk into it as needed.

Looking for a bit of inspiration so please share pics and I will as well once I complete mine (likely not until spring)

Seems like a daunting challenge. Interested to see what you come up with. I’m no help with the part that anchors everything to earth, but I may be able to help with the rails.

Jason, a thought that came to me I'd that I would set up my target to be as permanent as my humbler. 316 Stainless? Polycarbonate? I guess that's only limited by your imagination.

Back at the humbler, I might figure a way to use parts from a surveyor's transit or theodolite (literally, or as inspiration) to create a base that could have it's zero adjusted by small amounts if needed to center a scope on your test grid.

If youve ever used a spotting scope on a surveyors tripod you wouldnt think of trying to test a scope on one. Youll need a concrete bench and a heavy recoiling rifle on a solid rest. Then get one of alloy target’s scope checkers and youll be well on your way to pulling your hair out trying to figure out which one of the pair of scopes you use is broken

That's why I meant to use either PARTS or machine similar in larger dimension, and from steel.

I understand what he's trying to do, but I don't think that a slightly adjustable BASE (presumably 1/2" Strike-anchored to the top of his concrete column) would cause issue.

Tone is hard to read on the internet. But yeah, with a prior career as a geologist + GIS specialist, and the surveying and stratigraphic work behind it, I have indeed used survey equipment.

It's the tripod that's the issue, and I believe Mr. Baney will have that part pretty well removed from the equation.

The above is the testing of a Kahles 10x-50X against my proven Valdada 36X Benchrest. The checker is a Hood and Bart Sauter loaned it to me for a series of tests. Thanks Bart
