Scope Help!

Put a Burris Signature 6-24x42 on a Rem 700 Classic .221 FB with Leup bases and rings. Started with Med rings and went to lows and I have run out of down elevation. Tried 2 different sets of Weaver bases, 1 piece and 2 piece, several different sets of rings and still the same problem, not enough down elevation. Gun is sighted in perfectly 4.5" high at 100. Only thing that worked was putting a shim in the front ring, under the scope, but not sure if that is a permanent solution. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sounds to me like a faulty barrel or reciever back shelf machined wrong. With all those sets of rings doing the same thing its gotta be a barrel with an out of spec bend in it. Have you tried another scope? You should be in the middle of your elevation not all the way past it plus some more

Happens all the time with factory actions. Usually its a windage problem, but i have seen elevation problems plenty of times as well.

Search this forum for topics where we talk about lapping and bedding rings. The shim in the front of the base is fine for now, but i would get a ONE piece base and use JB Weld to raise and bed the base. Apply enough bedding in the front to raise it up where it needs to be. Then just skim bed the rear of the base so it has good contact but does not raise up.

Between bedding the base to correct the elevation issue and lapping/bedding the rings, there should be no more issues whatsoever...if done correctly of course.

Have you sanded down the stock channel to free float the barrel? That can cause the barrel to have a much lower POI and you will run out of down elevation on your scope.

Its not the rifle. Bought it NIB 5 years ago and its had a 6.5-20 and a 4.5-14 on it without issue, both 40mm. It will shoot .5" with the Burris, only 4.5" high. No modifications at all. I might give the JB Weld a try. Will the JB bugger up the blueing on the action over time?

Sounds like a burris problem then. I have an 8x32 that wont even get on target. I guess the tube is just not right with the world.

I think I am going to try to put the scope on a different rifle and see if I have the same issue. That might answer a few questions. They do have good glass.

Not nearly as much as a metal base screwed to the action.
