Scope Help--Tired of just OK

I'd just ask why you're firm on a FFP scope for target and some PD shooting. Most times using FFP for this in the field, I've found that the reticle obscures a small target much past 300 yards. This is the reason most everyone I know that is experienced shooting colony rodents uses SFP scopes in order to actually see that tiny critter way out there.
First I'm an old iron sight boy. I like FFP scopes as a check on my range finders, an example that comes to mind is when I had a chuck popped his head up behind the crest of a terrace. I was about 400 yards away, two terraces up and I could see him and the slope behind him buy my range finder was picking up 2 ranges. With my scope I trusted the longer range and made the hit.

I have been looking at the Tract Toric -----I am not dead set on a FFP but the Toric has an open dot style cross hair that would seem to help on the issue of covering the target--I just loved the FFP at my home range but only have had one single PD hunt of two days--so I was such a rookie--made so many mistakes--who knows? Maybe I should have had a SFP-----
I target all year and plan on PD shoot once or twice a year forever! Man! It was best fun ever with whatever rifle or scope--I just want to be better next time--My Vortex works perfect in bright sun-at any distence--but overcast, cloudy, or anything past 150 in those conditions--then it looks weak--no contrast, no color, sharpness poor at infinity type ranges
Anyone here OWN a Tract Toric ??that can chime in compare it to what you had before ??
Thanks!!!

John

Didn’t read all your reply’s but Swarovski and Nightforce have been my best scopes. High end Leupold and Zeiss are nice also. I know my LGS keeps a box in the back room just for Vortex send backs so I have never considered one of them. Just check reviews and go with your gut.

I am a life long shooter but have been at it more last few years since I retired --Shot rim fire during the pandemic with a 6-24 Vortex Diamondback Tactical--for $320 scope it has served me well--I like FFP and in the sun it is just fine--BUT...in overcast, shade, or anything less than ideal light the contrast is Poor--sharpness is just OK etc
I want to buy a varmint target scope in the same magnification range or close--FFP--that has Really Great Glass--I do not want to buy 4 more to finally find it! The trouble is you can't go many places and actually COMPARE scopes--
I am willing to spend up $1000- $1500 or so--would love to get a great unit for less but....
I see all the Youtube videos but go to the store and" No we dont have that one or that one--"
Name some that I have to look at I will put it on a 223 bolt gun that will be used mostly for target but some prairie dog shooting couple times a year
Help! Thanks!
As a varmint shooter, I think the Nightforce BR 8-32X is a fine scope. I've bought a few (used) on AS and they are sharp, great contrast, reasonably priced, useful reticles, all of em. It's long and heavy, though. I confess, I'm not up to date on the latest and greatest.

STRYKER HD 5-50×56 SFP
$1,590.00

DELTA OPTICAL, JAVELIN, SCOPE

Used isnt a bad way to go. I’ve seen quite a few good deals here and elsewhere on good glass. Heres one example. I’ve owned this model before and liked it, I currently have other Steiners too and think highly of them. Lots of top tier glass in the classifieds, just check the seller’s history and make sure there is good feedback. I always call and chat before buying high ticket items. I’ve seen some Schmidt and Benders, Mark 5s, and others go for really reasonable prices lately.

another used one, great scopes, great price.

I know you said FFP but I wanted to show you a deal on a new Trijicon, 2 of them in your power range. I’ve never seen them discounted this much. I bought the 3-18x. Probably the best value going on high quality glass currently.

Those Tenmiles are an amazing deal at those prices

you can get the trijicon ten mile at Euro optics 4.5x30 mrad very very good glass bright for 1059 and it has 100 moa or 29 mils, and tenebrex flip up caps

a good deal on the 4.5x30 $1100

Lots of good advice here --THANKS to all I really appreciate the time everyone took to help me.
I just ordered a Tract Toric--their flagship the 4.5-30 Jon said I would be happy with the 20X but I have bought about 5 scopes in last few years and have always wished for more--I hope that this unit will do it--It has too that was at the limit of what I was willing to spend--I saw other scopes that were probably made at LOW--The Delta Stryker, the Athlon Chronos and others look to be nearly the same --but after talking with Jon--he Earned my business with straight no bull--asked lots of questions but more important he listened to me--really listened and helped me decide. Very professional--customer centered Now --I just have to wait 5 weeks to see if I was right. Will report when I get it mounted--

That link to the TENMILE units had some smoking deals but I wanted MOA but Thanks anyway

Well I ordered middle of Sept and it finally arrived! I decided to go with Tract Toric 4.5-30x56
Got it mounted on the rifle this afternoon and have been "glassing" all over my property for the last hour--WOW!!! The optics on this thing are CRISP. I can't wait to get to the range in next few days.
First impressions are Quality all over--the controls are smooth as butter not too stiff--after I got it mounted the ole Savage did feel a lot heavier but I only shoot it from a rest or bench so that will work in my favor. Jon has been pure Pro to work with--They estimated a shipping date and only missed it by One day! I went ahead and ordered the Tenebraex flip up caps. It seems built like a tank--I have never seen scope optics like this--Will report soon and again--Thanks to all for the suggestions!

Well....First day at the range with the new Tract--I LIKE it! Glass is so clear and sharp--very bright
The turrets are very clean--solid clicks--line up dead on the lines--NO mush at all
Unit tracks perfect--better than I can measure--the controls are butter smooth not too stiff or too loose
The scope does have some weight--not a bad thing at all as I only use on a bench
The zero stop works like a door stop--very solid feeling
Scope has very good image quality at full power of 30x--edges look great
Eye box very forgiving
Overall I am sold on these--I think anybody that looks through one will agree

Sightron 10x50x60 .I have two. And only wish i had found them sooner. Tommy Mc

In that price range - I'd look at the higher-powered Sightrons or a nice, used Nightforce in the higher range.

Well, if you could live with 5-25x . . . AND . . . would settle for 34mm . . . AND . . . you don't mind draining your bank account, you might find a Nightforce Atacr that you like here.

I have an NXS 5.5-22x that I love but it's SFP. Knock-your-shoes-off glass and it tracks wonderfully.
I also have an old 5.5 x 22x NXS that is probably the best scope I've ever owned.

15% Off sitewide from TRACT right this minute--about $1400 for the top of the line--Had mine to the range three times this week and LOVE it---Customer service is the best ever
I am telling you the glass on these is just amazing

Congrats on a successful mission of finding a nice optic!
Next you can get rid of the Savage and get a nice action!!!
I kid, I kid...

I had a NF BR scope but it doesn't have side focus which I found annoying. The NXS and NX8 series have the side focus and are very useful for the pd's and gophers (ground squirrels).

Lots of helpful answers to your question but my thoughts are that i never buy any brand that I cannot re-sell and recoup most of my investment. Others will chime in with this and that as a favorite but my LGS keeps boxes in the back room of scopes that need to go back for repairs. Lots of scopes in the Vortex box… You set a budget of 1K to 1.5K which will eliminate several of the recommended scopes by other posts to your question. So - stick with a high quality name brand like Nightforce, Swarovski, Leupold, etc. Give a SFP scope a hard look because that opens up your options a lot. I have done a lot of varmint hunting and only used a FFP for one year before I sold it. As a parting note, side focus is a must in the varmint fields that once you use one, you will never want to go back to objective end focus.
