scope for ruger precision rifle?

ready to purchase new scope for RPR I shoot off the bench at 100,200 and 300 yards but want something capable of more. I looked through a friends burris fullfield II 4.5-14 at around 1000 yards and in, and can see pretty good. clear all the way to the edges but think I could use a little more even looking at 200 and 300 yards. Ill be shooting mostly paper. I think I want to try the IOR 36x42 fixed power. anyone had experience with one of thees? I live at sea level in oregon ,didnt see any mirage off the 4.5-14 but 36x is a lot more magnification. my thinking is IOR mainly for the quality of the glass and durability of the fixed power design. any thoughts and opinions would be welcome. the price of the 36x42 is around $1195.oo

For less than $400 often on this site you can buy a Weaver T36. Excellant optics and
repeatable windage/elevation adjustments.

The problem with a non variable is if conditions are bad you can't turn them down. I shoot a lot of times on 36X or more, but there are days where you have to turn it down to 25 or so. I am sure they are good scopes and I don't know what models are available, but I would look to see if they have a variable. If you are going to shoot to 1000 you should also look for at least 60 minutes of elevation. Matt

Depends on target size, e.g. moa vs a steel plate. On larger stuff like steel a moderate fixed power is fine. At a local 1100yd steel range the swfa 12x is popular and great for $300, and available up to 20x.

SWFA 10x mil quad reticle. $300. The SWFA 3-15 is nice too. 300 yards is a chip shot for Ruger Precision. Mine is 6.5 creedmore and shooting out to 985 on 1-2 MOA steel. Give lots of thought to your goals. If long range, 800+ is a goal, consider a mil reticle. If strictly trying to shoot small groups at a few hundred yards, max magnification is a good idea. But those often have 1/8 MOA clicks and are utterly useless in many circumstances. Just paper punchers. A mil reticle will allow you to shoot at 300, 550, 886, 986, and 1200, etc. dialing or holding depending on caliber. I've got a few Burris Signatures and Black Diamond 8-32 that are useless to me now. Look at Vortex Viper perhaps. SWFA 3-15. Vortex Razor. SWFA HD 5-20. If long distance is a high priority.

Something different that I have been pleased with and way beyond what I expected: Bushnell 6-24x50 Tactical Elite
Very clear optics. FFP (but available in SFP) .1mil clicks Used on coyotes which always seem to be long shot so the FFP allows range finding at any power. And the G2DMR reticle is really to my liking. It works for me quite well. (6.5-284)

Go over to SWFA.com and check out the Super Snipers. I have found the 16x to be absolutely awesome from 0-1000 yards. I prefer the mil/mil setup myself but you have other options. These are great scopes. Tough and dependable. You can choose from 6x up to 20x. Tons of internal adjustment. More than most any other scope and certainly for any scope at that price level. Enjoy, You can't own just one ;)

The Super Sniper straight power scopes are nice, dependable, strong and they do hold a decent resale value. On the other hand if you ever do shoot a tactical match and are under time in position after position in a stage acquiring the target with a 16 or 20 power fixed will slow you down. I would take a look at the Vortex PST 6-24, they can be had for under $900.00. Good glass and repeatable, excellent warranty like the SWFA S.S. I currently shoot my 5-20 HD S.S., like it alot and have been shooting it since the group buy on the Hide. Moving to a PST soon for primary and the S.S. will go on my backup rifle.
