Scope for long range PRS type matches.

I just got a Swfa SS 20 x for my CZ 455. I got it for steel matches from rest. It has 110 moa of adjustment. I like this scope, but may be too much power for off hand shooting. I have a Kidd Supergrade with a 8 X 32 Nightforce benchrest on it now , I need to get this scope back on my 6BR centerfire. What scope do you like for 22lr PRS type matches? What power do you like? I am looking at some of the lower power Swfa's

Mark, I put a SWFA 12x mil-quad on my .223 trainer. I like it for all positional shooting. When I'm shooting my 6mm Competition Match or my .243 in PRS type shoots they are topped with my SWFA SS 5-20 HD mil-quad. I also run this on 12x during positional shooting. The only time I'm on 20x is on a stage that is usually prone and same yardage where I do not have to hunt the target. I would definitely run the 12x on my .22.

I have a Razor Gen 1 5-20x on my 22. Pretty good scope for PRS 22 type matches. Our match has very small targets and the extra magnification helps. Field of view and variable power helps with matches that run on a timer.

I have a 3-18x Razor II on my Vudoo that I use for PRS style .22 matches. It has a lot of elevation and 18x is more than enough and with the small open center reticle it is easy to get a good sight picture on small targets.

I currently use a 20X or 24X for smallbore silhouette (offhand shooting).

Not to obstruct your original question, but if PRS requires multiple shooting positions (its my understanding it does), I believe I would want a scope that has a generous eye relief for all the various positions that I would be shooting from. I believe I'd pick a variable that would allow me to find the power that gives me the best compromise between power (assuming you want the most possible) and eye relief that permits prone, supported, or offhand fire with all positions as stress free and natural as possible.

I've sold Athlon Ares 4.5-27x50 mil/mil 30mm scopes to a couple of friends who are shooting 22RF PR matches; one has his mounted on a jelrod-converted 40X repeater, the other on his V-22. Both have had all positive comments on these scopes, although the guy with the V-22 says he had issues with his windage knob getting spun when he pulls his rifle out of its case. For the money, I believe these scopes are the best buy out there for a ffp mil/mil scope with HD glass & true zero stop.

I have Athlon Cronus 4.5-29x56 mil 34mm scopes mounted on my 22RF repeaters (two 40X, one V-22); these are the original Cronus models, not the newer BTRs. While I'm sure I could get by quite easily with Ares scopes on these rifles, I've gotten spoiled by the Cronus' superior optical quality, so these scopes are staying right where they are...

I am using a Sightron SIII 8 x 32 I moved this off an other gun, It Has 75 MOA adjustment, and I know it tracks. The Athlon Ares 4.5-27x50 looks like a good scope.

Thanks for the help

I am using S&B 5-25s and 5-20 Ultra Shorts.

For small targets I like the Gen 2 XR reticles, for bigger targets the H2CMR is fine.

I run a S&B/H59 on my Anschutz. Honestly I love this scope but there are times I want more than 20x. I've thought about buying that NF 7-35 but I'm pretty much done with the cost of high end scopes anymore and I don't like their reticles very much. If S&B's hadn't come down in price new in 2017, making the resale compared to what I paid in 2015 such a huge loss, I might be tempted to go for it.

I might switch the Cronus BTR 4.5-29x56 over to it, I haven't made up my mind yet.

It'd be easier to just buy a Ares 4.5-27x50. My good friend has one on his AR and when I shoot behind that scope I ask myself why spend more money, it's that good??!! Also it has my favorite mil reticle as far as tree style go.

Heck, I've had fantastic luck with the Argos BTR's but I deem an Anschutz worthy of more expensive glass and I like .2 mil hashes on the main crosshair.

Steve, I bought a couple of the new Cronus BTRs before our club's annual gun show last month - wasn't all that optimistic about chances of selling scopes of this quality/price level at this show, but you can't sell 'em if you don't show 'em, so... I've compared the newer BTR's reticle to that of the older original Cronus, and believe its slightly finer section would be an advantage when shooting very small targets (although I've not had any issues with the original reticle), and I like the slightly larger font for the numbers on the turrets (I've had trouble determining whether I had my elevation knob on zero or 9 with the smaller font of the original scopes in poor light). Haven't had one of the new BTRs outdoors to compare optical quality, so can't comment on that, though I'd like to hear other Cronus BTR owners' opinions of the glass quality. The glass of the original Cronus is good enough that it'd probably take some serious comparisons to detect any difference - or at least, that's my opinion.

The Ares scopes are new enough so that I don't have a lot of feedback or personal experience on how durable they're going to prove to be - have three of them on custom rifles I've built for my own use - Howa Mini in 6RAT, M700 in 223AI, M70 in 6x47L - and would like to put the one I have left in stock on another new M700 in 7-08 Improved 30*. I put them on these rifles to get more personal experience with them - and so far, they've all been good. But I'm really looking forward to getting the 34mm Ares scopes I pre-ordered - my feeling is that they're going to sell a lot of these scopes.

I got some interesting news when I was at Shot working in the Athlon booth. The factory that makes the new Ares 34mm bought a brand new super expensive and super precise umpity ump axis cnc machine. I got to fiddle with a one off protype made with this machine, that scope was so nice it felt like a $3000+ scope, no exaggeration either!!! The action of all the controls were just exquisite. I would be very surprised if this 4.5-30 doesn't become "the" medium priced tactical scope to have.
