Scope for a 17HMR for PDogs

I shoot with both eyes open so eye fatigue is not a big deal. Whatever scope you choose for your rimfire make sure you have an adjustable objective that will focus to 25 yards or closer like my Weaver to 50ft.

Agree 100% with keeping both eyes open. My closest shot this year was 13 yards. The scope I was using would only focus down to around 30 yards, so it was just a blur. And since the centerline of the scope is about 2.5" above the center of the bore, a lot of compensation involved.

I have a Burris Timberline on my 17HMR rimfires and they came with a chart for the ballistic reticle using 17gr bullets. Have whacked groundhogs out past 200 yards using the chart.

The HMR is good to about 175 yards IMO. I would think that a 3-9 or 4-12 in a Leupold VX2 with a fine duplex or something similar would meet the requirements.

I'm currently running a 3-9x on the anschutz 17hmr that I am using. Plenty of power for the distance. A fixed 8x through 12x would also be a good option.

What would be your choice for a good solid scope to run on a 17HMR for shorter range PDs? Gun is a Savage 9317R Heavy Barrel. I want something that won't fatigue my eyes bad, if I end up running it for a good portion of the day on shorter shots.
Never been a BSA scope fan certainly not on a big centerfire BUT I gave one a shot on my Marlin 17 HMR. It's the 6-18 sweet 17 model. Very good pricing and believe it or not, it gets that gun shooting great Everytime. It's one of the turret calibrated for the bullet models. Think it's calibrated for the 17 grain ballistic tip bullet. Mine was a bit off on the clicks at a couple distances so I used a sharpie to make my own marks where the range was dead on. That's the only thing I did to get it exact at all ranges to 300 yards. I think it cost around 150.00 shipped. Good luck.

Think I paid something like $50 for a Tasco mil dot 2.5 - 10 with AO back in the early 90's when the 17 HMR came out. Used it multiple times for PD's out west. Many times for varmint and fun in the East. Wrote a multi-page article on that rifle killing groundhogs out to near 300 yards in the old Varmint Hunter magazine.

Still looks good through the scope and always has held zero.

Ok I know I'm a little over kill here but I have a leupold 6.5x20 on my Marlin 17 hmr and I use the variable a lot. Yeh I know I have more in the glass than the gun but it works out really great for the Snerts.

No such thing IMO regarding power for scopes provided your lowest power isn't too high for the closest ranges you'll use it for. When shooting prairie dogs or smaller targets at 300 yards, the higher power scopes really shine when pin point accuracy is needed. We were shooting flies at 50-100 yards with mine. Not every fly was hit but some were. Targets had the splattered proof on them. The 18 power helped.
