Scope for a 17HMR for PDogs

What would be your choice for a good solid scope to run on a 17HMR for shorter range PDs? Gun is a Savage 9317R Heavy Barrel. I want something that won't fatigue my eyes bad, if I end up running it for a good portion of the day on shorter shots.

I have a Cooper Montana 17 HMR which is one of the most accurate rifles I own out to 175 yards and use it strictly for P-DOGS. I use an old Weaver K-12 straight power scope which ideal for short range dogs. Any 10-16 straight power scopes would be great . You can find these scopes for around $100.00 - $150.00 . For my 17hmr, I took a chance on an Athlon Midas 4.5-27x50. Very nice glass and a simple reticle, it's not a NF, but this is a rimfire.

Might be frowned upon here but I have a Burris 4.5x14 Predator model with the side focus and E1 ballistic reticle. It is perfect for my application and in your budget. I have a 2x7 with the same reticle on a 541T and they both work very well on the dogs. I highly recommend them.

My CZ452 in 17HMR wears a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14 side focus.
It has always been plenty for long shots but even the 4.5 can be too much for the really short blasting (inside 50 yards).
In any case, a variable scope has always worked best for me. I also have this same scope on my CZ 17 Ackely Hornet and it works well there too, even when shots get out to the 300 yard range.

Let me qualify that my Buckmaster scopes are the older model ones. They quit making these about three or four years ago. As for eye relief and fatigue they work well with my eyes.
I've been on trips where we had days of riding the two-tracks shooting from the seat of truck and never was an issue for me.

I have Leupold Vari X III 4.5x14x40 AO scopes on my 17 HMR and 17 WSM. They have served me well on a variety of rimfires.

A scope I really like in that application is the Sightron S-TAC 4-20X50mm with a 30mm tube and the MOA reticle. Really clear, good range of zoom and the reticle is good for distance and windage holdover. Can be bought for around $360.

Do consider the Nikon Monarch 3 scope.

I believe the .17HMR is a wonderful caliber for prairie dog- and ground squirrel- sized animals out to ~150 yards. I consider the power range of the Monarch (4x-16x) to be ideal for that purpose. The higher end will let you hit at distance, the lower end will not hamper you in finding animals close-in. It has good glass and it tracks well. It's about $450 - $500 at Midway.

i got a Bushnell 10X with dots. I think it is the 3200, but don't quote me. It has knobs, plex with dots. I like it, was $200. As far as eye strain...well, my eyes are good so I can't say.

Something to maybe consider. If you have any intentions of stretching your shots out beyond 100 yards, you may want to consider a scope with some kind of parallax adjustment.

I have never noticed any eye strain with these scopes. The only time I have experienced it was the first time I shot dogs - I shot all day with my left eye closed too tightly all day using an old Burris 6-18x. My left eye was blurry for a while that evening. Maybe the side focus has something to do with not experiencing it since then.

An HMR can reach pretty far. 200 yards is easy on PD’s. Pick a variable with a top end from 12-18 power. Mil dot or Christmas tree reticle works great.

I've got a savage 93r17fv -sr with a cheap 6-18x vortex crossfire II that has been a solid combo. My daughter shoots clay pigeons with it out to 300.

For the money I like the Weaver V-16 on my closer range pd guns.My Ruger 22K hornet also has one as well as the 19 Calhoon Hornet.Lots of good suggestions in this thread,I should try some of the ones suggested,I kinda get stuck in my ways.I must have 6 or more of the Weavers,bought them right,and I still need more scopes

Love this scope,have one on my primary coyote rifle(20Tac imp)it does great for me,wish I bought more with the front AO.

I've been using a Weaver KT10X on my Anschutz 17HMR for years and recently on a Savage A17. Shots to 200 yds. are easy with literally no eye fatigue. I shoot with both eyes open so eye fatigue is not a big deal. Whatever scope you choose for your rimfire make sure you have an adjustable objective that will focus to 25 yards or closer like my Weaver to 50ft.
