Scope for 45-70

I want to put a scope on a Henry 45-70. I can afford up to 250-300. I want to see clearly the target at 200 yds. Any suggestions.

I don't know if you have a scope in mind but i will clearly state this;
You don't need a 50mm scope on your Henry 45-70. imho

Years ago, I purchased a used marlin with a large objective scope mount on it. The scope looked awkward/ cumbersome sitting on the marlin. I quickly replaced it with a compact 1-4x20 scope (much better. A lever-action is a compact quick handling rifle. I don't like adding bulk to it.)
(Some purist would say it's a sin to put a scope on a lever-action. But I say you can't hit what you can't see. Lol)
To each their own. 40mm objective would be the largest I would use on a lever-action. just my $0.02

My dad has a Leupold Rifleman scope on his Marlin for the last 10 to 15 years and it has worked out fine for him.

What ever you get, be sure it has plenty of eye relief.
I use a low end Steiner on mine, it’s a 2-10 and has huge eye relief.

I do a lot of coyote hunting and the Leupold straight tube scopes in the 1-4x20 range either VX-1, VX-3 or Freedom all work well and are fine out to 300 yards on coyotes. The Weaver V-3 works, I killed my largest deer with on on my rifle. I had high hopes for the Sightron S1G2 1.75-5 but it had a fisheye problem on the lowest setting and Sightron refunded my money. I did kill coyotes with it though.

I bought a 45-70 in a TCR 83 that had a Tasco 3x20 pronghorn scope on it, A inexpensive scope but I stuck with it and have shot the gun at least 80 times since I have had it with no problem what so ever, I imagine if it can hold up to that recoil , It’s a great scope because the gun kicks bad !!!!!

I have a plain jane Leupold VX-1 3-9X40mm that would work well out to 300 yards and is very clear. You can probably find one for a little over $200. Slightly less, you can get a Burris Fullfield 3-9X40mm at Natchez on sale for $125 right now. Both are very basic scopes with very good glass and coatings for the price. Both are covered with great warranties. I assume you are going to use your rifle for hunting.

I've always used Leupold's 1.5-5X VARI X III on heavy recoiling guns like 45-70 and 375 H&H although I don't have them anymore. That was a good time in my life , but getting to old and decrepit to enjoy them. I've rolled several milk jugs full of water in my time though
