scope for .308

hey there i have a .308 that i wanna start using for coyotes and want one of them cool lookin reticle scopes for it. i beleive the one i want is called the range finding or mil dot. now my question is how do you sight it in to the yardage on the ticks below it? like say raising the target to the third line say 300 yards?i dont know too much about them i only use standard cross hairs. any info would be great thanks!

all mil dot scopes are not the same.and when or if you get a mil dot retical they will give you the info for sighting in.for my old mil dot I sighted in at 200 with the tee part and was able to use the dots aftrer that.and even the better scope makers they show for each yardage on the retiical.or you could get a mil dot chart.

for me I would just get a good target dot retical and use the target turrets to move up.any good shooter will be useing a bc chart to know were to move the ret for a wanted range for bullet impact.and will even see if the chart is on with the actual impact.but hey this is just an opinion.

Mil dots were developed for range estimation. My opinion is, that with a good scope and external adjustments, clicking the adjustment is more precise. How far do you plan to shoot? I use mil dot scopes to confirm my laser range results.

If you want to try out using a Mil-Dot for range estimation, try the following site.

http://www.shooterready.com/lrsdemolow.html I purchased the full CD. It was a good training tool.

I agree with Klong, a Mil-Dots main advantage is just range estimation. It becomes a problem if you don't know the exact height of the object you are estimating distance to. I have a table tapped to the stock on my 308. It has both Mils for holdover and windage as well as clicks for dailing it in. If I am setting (laying) down to practing long range shooting I will use both holdover and dail in. Some times a coyotes runs out of the grass and appears at 100 yds and some times at 400 yds. An object moving as fast as a coyote running into a call doesn't give you much time for dailing in. I know exactly how my Mil-Dots for holdover between 0 and 400 yds in my memory with my pet 308 load.

You might be better served with one of the varmint recticles that several scopes have available. They give quick holdover and windage for up to 300-400 yds. You just need to calibration your scope to your load with some range time.

Luck, Tim

If the gun is for hunting, a regular duplex scope is good out to about 250 yards with no hold over. Sight it in high, around 2 inches at 100 yards, and the drop out to 250 and maybe out to 300, depending on bullet weight, will still be in the kill zone.

For longer distance I'd rather range and then dial the scope for that range, but if you want a ballistic style scope I think the ones with hash marks rather than dots or circles work much better. Burris and Leupold make nice simple ballistic type reticles. Complicated reticules can be confusing when you only have a few seconds to get off a shot. If cool is what you are after, there are lots of reticules design to entice shooters.

My cool scope is my mil dot Sightron. Never used the dots once. Figured out how to range when I first bought it, but for hunting I don't have time to do the math. I would have to scab a calculator to the stock to make it work.

mil dots are ok, but i prefer a reticle that is graduated in the same type of adjustment as my scope turrets. like a MOA reticle with MOA adjustments, it just makes the math that much easier, not that converting mil-dots is hard.
