Scope for 22-250

Just bought my first 22-250 rifle…need a suitable scope. I have a nice Leupold VXIII 4.5-14x50, sitting on my .223…and a Weaver V 16 in my gun cabinet. Any suggestions from 22-250 owners?.

What are you going to use it for? That would go a long way towards my selection of a scope for a 22-250. I call coyotes with a couple of 22-250's one wears a 2.5-8 and the other a 2.5-10 a nice compromise of large FOV for close in and enough X's to make use of the 22-250 capabilities.

If you already have something you like and it'll suit your needs, even if just for now, that's probably a good place to start.

For me what scope I use or even recommend largely depends on the type of shooting/hunting I plan to do with that particular rifle. You certainly can if you'd like but I don't see the need to put high any kind of significant scope on a rifle you either won't be shooting a lot or one you won't be shooting past 3-400yds. If you do plan to shoot or hunt with this rifle a lot what distance do you think you'll mostly be shooting and if you're hunting with it what type of hunting will you be doing with it. Long range, short range, wide open, heavy cover, and the list goes on and on.

To get better recommendations that are applicable to you and the intended use of this new rifle it helps to give more specifics as to what and how you intend to use it.

My 1965 M70 22-250,now on its 3rd barrel is wearing a Leupold M8 16x with a small dot. For the first barrel, it wore a Redfiels 6-18 with the ranging setup, did a lot of walking back then!. I don't do closeup coyotes so don't miss a low. In my younger days it was a crow rifle. Now it travels with the 223s on PD trips for windy or longer range days.

Riton x3 Conquer 6-24x50 FFP R700 VSSF 22-250 The higher starting power doesnt bother me.

You’re in Scotland? Maybe shooting foxes or small deer? I like my 22-250s to max out at around 15 or 20 power, but I have a 6 - 24 x50 on one of mine now for targets.

I have 4 of those weaver v-16's. One of the best general purpose varmint scopes I ever had. Clear and dependable. Turrets always repeatable. I trust mine. Rock what you have.

I forgot about the Weavers, I have a few older T series. I have a real nice T6 and a T10. old school, but very nice. the newer ones are supposed to be very nice too. Some of the older Tasco scopes are excellent.

To bad you're not in the states I have a Bausch and Lomb Elite 4000 4-16x50AO that would work nicely for you.

I have several Leupold VXIII, 4.5x14 scopes when they made them in 1" tube with adjustable objectives. This is absolutely my favorite scope of all time. For me, it is the perfect varmint / predator scope if you are not dialing up to compensate for changes in elevation.

I had one on my 22 250 when I shot this caliber years ago. It worked to perfection, never felt under scoped. However, all my shots were 300 yards and under.

I also have a few old VXII, 4 x12, with adjustable objectives. Another favorite on mine for hunting varmints and predators.

Most of my old 22-250s wore leupolds, 2.5-8, 3.5-10, 4.5-14x, anything more than 4.5x makes shooting close when calling tough if your target is moving in sage or whatever the case may be. Most of those rifles were shooting 50-55 grain bullets. My current 22-250 is a 1-8 twist, standard Tikka, I’m using 80 grain Bergers in it shooting a pretty stout load. On that rifle I have a Leupold Mark5 2-10 so I can dial range. I can still use the 2x up close and 10x is plenty to get me out there if need be.

Swarovski do a 3.5-18 with a 1" tube that is really versatile. You can also get them with a ballistic turret so you can set it up with zeros for 4 different ranges of your choice. I just do 100, 200, 300 and 400. Anything in between you can easily hold or just wind it half way between the two zeros.

Glass is really nice as you would expect and they are pretty good value considering.

There’s a Vortex Strike Eagle for sale in “ Optics “. It’s used but fairly priced. My group of friends that shoot long range .22s , bought all that we could find when Vortex discontinued that particular model. I’d suggest looking at it. Lots of scope for the money. Good luck.

Put a rail on your new shooter and get 2 scopes. One for LR and one for coyotes. One of the 2 should be a M8 6x with fine duplex.

Decision for you is if you would prefer target turrets to make it easier to dial the scope, or do you even plan on doing that or just holding over?
There’s a thousand different options for you in a broad price range(just look at what’s been mentioned already, from Tasco to Swarovski), but the truth is the Weaver V16 you already have sitting there doing nothing will work very well for that gun. Just depends on if you want to use what you have, spend more money, and if so how much?
