Scope experience -- Vortex 15-60x

Texas Solo

B.S. High Master
I want a better scope, more power.
Currently have a Vortex Viper HST 6-24X50. Looking at a Vortex Golden Eagle 15-60x52. It has 1/8 moa adjustments which I really like. It's listed as for F Class & Benchrest. I shoot F Class at 600yds, soon to be 1000yds.
Before anyone starts telling me to look elsewhere, that Vortex is junk, etc etc, my Viper has taken me to High Master.
Also, I get a steep 50% discount on Vortex products through my work.
So it WILL be a Vortex!

Anyone here have experience with this scope?

Yes. I purchased one after taking a VGE that my buddy had just mounted and went side by side through magnification setting with my 12-42 NF BR. I liked my NF but prefer my VGE. I've been able to run higher magnification with clarity as good as the NF or a little better. Remember an individuals eyes also come into play for this.

I’m not a competitor but I have looked through and played with a golden eagle at 600 yards for fun. I thought the scope was a good value for the money as far as the glass and turrets are concerned. The reticle is quite fine but at the 600+ distances I think that is helpful for your purpose. The glass was easily as good as my Gen 2 Viper PST 5-25.

A random observation that I noticed was that when going beyond 40x the mirage and barrel heat began to show up much more than at 20-25x. I think this is true of all scopes though and I’ve observed the same through other high quality Nightforce optics as well.

I went from conventional high power to FTR, and bought three GE, two ECR and an SCR. They are a great scope. I’m in the PNW, and several of our ranges are very dark in the morning, so much so, I was powering down a lot! I looked through an NF Comp, and it was like a spot light was on the target. I had zero issues with the GE’s. It was a “me” issue with my eyes.

First, don't let a discount be the deciding factor for buying a scope.
(your 50% will be off the retail price $2800)
I'm sure you've read all the reviews on the GE.
So I'm not sure what your asking if you have read all the comments.
I started with the PST also, a great scope for the money.
The GE is a great value at that price point, and the ECR-1 reticle is
one of the best out there. It does have a couple of down sides that you already
know about.
Up to 40x-45 it's a great scope and above that, it's still ok, just gets darker faster than others.
It's still usable.
Don't be surprised down the road if you upgrade to a more expensive scope.

I shoot mostly LR F Class. I have one on a spare rifle. There are always a few on the line. Mechanically they are reliable. It depends on how good of glass you want. I don’t find the glass very impressive especially at what they list for. Think 90’s technology NF BR and NSX. They did nail it with ECR -1 reticle which is possible the best F class reticle I’ve seen. Look through one first if you can. If your price is $1400ish it’s not a bad deal and you’ll be able to get most of your money out of it if you decide to upgrade later.

Interesting to note that Glenn used a Votex Golden Eagle while setting 8 world records https://bulletin.accurateshooter.co...amazing-record-setting-6-bra-1000-yard-rifle/
Yep, definitely took note of that, as well as the sinclair comp front rests used at DC and so fourth. (I look closely at pictures of bench set ups and you montana guys just might know a little about BR lol)
I have 2 GEs and don't think a scope upgrade will shrink my groups or get more xs at 600 yd.

I also have a March on 80X at 600 (still can't see holes which I was hoping would get me over the hump to win a match or 2 by adjusting/holding off during record)
but still might try a NF comp at some point cause my eyes aren't getting better.

I purchased one recently - and to be honest - I'm not that happy with it. I have great difficulty seeing the centre dot - although it is similar in size to the reticle on my Kahles 10-50. However - I'm not planning to move it on - yet - but I would be happier if I had another Kahles or March on the rifle.

Well of course you would be happier.

This is exactly why YOU the person buying a scope needs to either buy or try as many
as you can. On a good day, ( all depends on lighting ) I can see 6mm holes @600 with a 50x
Everyones eye's are starting off at a different point than the other person.
Next scope I want to try is the Sightron SVSSED 10-50 hear nothing be good reviews.
And I've tried some top end scopes.
Guess I'm hoping for that one that you look through and say, holy crap that's the one...
Haven't found it yet.

I've been guilty of that.
I think I'm going to try a S3 Sightron 10-50 for my next scope. It will either be for f class or ARA .22rf.
I like my S3 10-50. I have one on me 6BR and have been doing quite well with it this year. The eye box is far more forgiving that the March/Kahles or the GE.

Love my two and looking to get another. They do get a little dark above 50x, but on a good bright day they're fine to these 71 year old eyes. Both are SCR, next one will be ECR.
Good choice, good shooting to you.

I have 2 and love them. Yes they all get dark because the exit pupil of the scope ( 52/magnification) gets smaller than the iris in your eye. It is not a flaw in the scope! At full magnification they are not as sharp and of course very dark. Hence i run mine at 40 and it is easier to get behind.

At 600 and 1000 yards f class I run my VGE normally at 48 power. I have shot several matches at 600 yards all 3 relays on 60 power when conditions allowed, clear rings. It's sweet being able to see the x ring that well.

I felt it was due to the HD glass. Sightron 10-50 also has a small exit pupil also yet the image quality doesn’t darken the same as the GE. I’m not expert on these matters just a user of both scopes and that’s just my opinion.
