scope elevation

I am double checking but with my turret turned as low as it will go I am still shooting 6 inches high at 100 yards I'm thinking I would have to shim the front mount is this correct???

If you are bottomed out on your elevation and you are still 6 inches high at 100 yards. You have something else going on there. Before shimming the base I would purchase a 40 MOA base, but there is the possibility that either the rifle or the mounting hardware are the problem.

ok I will remove scope and check for problem but if there is no problem with installment and I seldom use this gun is it the front rings that need shims?

I would try a different set of rings and/or bases.Something is defiantly out of whack if you are that bad out at 100 yards!

I've had this happen a few times, usually with older scopes that I am really putting on for "period". What hogpatrol gave you is definitely the probably best and the modern way. There really isn't anything wrong with shimming though. I always used an old aluminum beer can and just cut it with sissors. It probably is not as prevalent today but windage wise we used to get one every once in a while that was just simply drilled off center, a lot of the reason the old scope mounts that had windage available. It is definitely better to take the problem out with the mounts and keep your scope as close to "optically centered" as possible.
This info is for hunting rifles but don't let anyone tell you it doesn't work. By the way you were right in your 1st thought that you needed to shim the front ring up for the problem you outlined.
