Scope Diopter Question

Hello,

I am a highpower shooter and have a .22 clone of my match rifle for practice.

Leupold used to make and sell a 3rd lens for some of their scopes which threaded on in front of the objective lens. This allowed the scope to be focused at shorter ditances - 50 feet and 10m. You get the idea.

I would info from anyone here who has had a custom 3rd lens made for their scope by an optemetrist. I have heard that it can be done. I am wanting to know what prescription lens worked for them, and how they went about finding that sweet spot. I was at the optometrist last night. I took just the scope with me. We tried many different lenses, but no success in getting it to focus at the distance I am looking for.

I've got one of the Leupold adapters for 40 mm objectives. They marketed it as a "gallery lens".

I hoped it would allow me to focus a minimum-30-yd scope at 20 yds. The original scope focus could get me to about 23-24 yds, and with the adapter it worked up to about 18 yds.. this was with an adjustable objective VX-2 scope. 20 yds wasn't workable. Good product, just didn't work for my purpose.

I guess what I'm saying is there's a very narrow range of use that they'll work for. Go into it knowing that.

Photo outlets and Amazon sell close-up adapter sets that thread into camera and scope objectives that will do the job - you just have to match the thread size. Usually the weakest (often 0.5 diopter) will do the job. They are inexpensive (much less than the cost of a custom lens from an optical shop/optometrist) and available off the shelf.
