SCHUETZEN

Great sport. Wish there was an active group doing this in my neck of the woods. The rifles are gorgeous and surprisingly accurate. Modern Schuetzen combines bench and offhand. The bench portion proves the rifle and the offhand proves the man.

They have gongs to zero on. So there was steel. I dry fired one of those rifles and I'll say it would be tough to keep them all on paper. Most guys did loose some off the paper. I lot were shooting 45-70 and about 50/50 smokeless to black powder from what I could tell. My coffee intake will prevent me from ever being any good off hand. I sucked even with a coat in high power. But I think it will be fun. I dont know much about the rules at this point, but they seem pretty basic.

I used to run into the same two Schuetzen guys every Sat morning in Oak Ridge. They were kind of neat to watch and talk to. Found out in talking to them that one had been using the same piece (as in one single case) of brass for yrs. I looked at that and thought, [expletive deleted] they really are doing something right.

I think they were shooting 32s. It was some kind of smaller caliber straight walled case with cast or swaged bullets.

At what distance do they schuet zem? I watched a guy practicing with one a few years ago. It looks interesting, but I don't get enough time to shoot the rifles that I already have.

The guys in Oak Ridge were shooting 200 yards with the 32s, pretty darned challenging with a 32 that has the MV of a 22LR and the BC not much better than a marble.

Wow, there is a lot more actual Schuetzen rifles there than there used to be, when we shot there was maybe three or four actual Schuetzen rifles and the rest were silhouette rifles just keeping tuned up till summer.

Schuetzen is an old German Target Rifle style that in this country has 4 different stages. Off hand irons and scope and bench rest irons and scope. The off hand has a more generous target. Rifles are falling block single shot and cast led bullets. There is a limit on muzzle velocity. Most are around 32 cal. The majority seat the bullet first then a case with an over powder wad goes in behind it. Firing is at 200 yards. The accuracy of the rifles is surprising and in mild wind those old heavy slow subsonic bullets post some good scores. Unfortunately there are fewer and fewer people taking up the sport and as people retire the number of shooters falls off. We have about 8-10 shooters at our local matches at our range and hold a regional match each year. The Nationals are at Raton in the Summer.

My grandfather had one of those old German Sheutzen breech rifles built in the late 1800's. I was hoping I would get that rifle one day, but he gave it to one of my uncles when he passed :( It's an absolute beautiful piece of handcrafted artwork. Has the double set triggers and amazing engraving work. Wish I had a picture of it.

But he did give me a really cool heavy barreled bolt action benchrest style 22 LR built in 1940 (Old Stevens military target training rifle) Still one of the most accurate 22s I've ever fired to date.

Seems popular in the mountain west. The rifles are incredible. There used to be a company in Wyoming that made them, but I’m not sure what happened. May have gone out of business or been sold off. Another cool game is blackpowder benchrest. Talk about some crazy guns.

Crazy how accurate some of those custom black powder BR rifles are at 1K. Some of them arent very far behind Centerfire BR rifles
