School the Rem newbie on firing pin fall...

Hi all, need some help from more experienced guys. I'm putting together a 25x47L for F-class. Rem 700 single shot action, PTG bolt, Jewell trigger, and Gre-Tan firing pin set-up. The issue is the bolt is unusually hard to close with the firing pin assembly installed. With out the assembly it feels perfect. Measured firing pin fall several times and got .305-.306. Firing pin protrusion is good at .058". I've never seen a number that large for firing pin fall and it's very stiff bolt closing and a fair bit of cock on close it feels like. Would definitely upset the gun in bags when opening and closing the bolt. What to do? Thanks

Im no expert on this but seems that .305 fall is higher than normal. If my memory serves me .230 to .250 seems more like the number.

Also, how you are measuring and the equipment used to measure will determine whether the measurement you are getting is correct.

I have the barreled action in a vise and I'm using a magnetic base dial indicator. I cock the bolt, get a zero, then dry fire and check the dial. I've heard and read .250 is about where you want to be. The other Rem I built measures just under .250" with Factory action, PTG bolt, Timney trigger and Gre-tan firing pin assembly. Different gun with different parts = different measurements. Maybe cocking piece out of spec front to back wise or trigger pin holes out of position maybe?

If it makes a difference the cocking piece looks like it's coming back too far towards the rear of the rifle. It's protruding to my eye noticeably more than my other Rem.

Tried it with the factory trigger and same thing. I've got a firing pin spring tool on the way and I'll swap firing pin parts and see what happens.

You can take a pocket knife, closed of course, and catch the cocking piece with the edge of the blade and pull the pin to the rear.

Thanks. I'm getting going on a bathroom remodel today. I'll see if I can get out to the shop. Rather be working on the gun...
