School me... TenX w/ Shilen Ratchet

garandman

Bolt Gun Bodacious
Possible for sale gun built by a professional Smith That I am going to look at to possibly purchase.

Any reviews / opinions of the 10 X action with a Shilen ratchet barrel ?

I was fortunate enough to acquire an older 10X-X3 built by Gorham with a Shilen ratchet, Harrel's tuner, Jewel trigger and stock bedded by Meredith. Was told that it had 10k through the barrel and have shot nearly 2k this season with great success, a true pleasure to use.

Several years ago some of the 10x cocking pieces were a little soft. Not a huge deal if you keep it greased.
How you can tell is by running your finger down its surface & you may feel a ridge.
I have one & once I removed it & polished the ramp it hasn't reappeared. Remember, keep it lubed.
Customer service can be iffy at best, or thats what I've found when trying to buy an action years ago.Maybe thats improved, haven't tried as I haven't needed anything. You shouldn't either. About all you should ever need is a fp spring which can be sourced elsewhere.
The majority of the barrels I have a Shilen Ratchets. All shoot well. I wouldn't be too concerned about round count, it meaningless imo.
Condition of the bore is more important & if you can borescope it you can see any troublesome spots.
Shoot the rifle if you can.
One other thing I will say is I wouldn't hesitate replacing any barrel on a gun. They're cheap in the grand scheme & will be piece of mind in the end. Consider that in the price if possible.
Good Luck!

Woh owns it. What has it shot at matches?
That would be my questions.
The action is proven. Shilen barrels are proven.
I think rebarreling is a good thing after learning the rifle.
I bought an xiii years ago. The seller had a great pedigree with the rifle. It was shot hundthousads of rounds ..literally, By the time I put another on it.
The Smith that built it had info on the rifle. He cut me a barrel and mailed it to me. I've shot a couple of perfect targets with it since.
But I've also shot allot of chit because I don't practice anymore.

These rifles run around the 3k range in the ara/ir50 arena.
Nobody is selling their best but it could become your best.
