School me on rear bags !!

All right bench guru's i need to step up my load development to the next level no more bipod and socks full of plastic BB's.

I will be buying a rest here soon nothin fancy what i need to know is do i pick a rear bag based on my size or elbow on table to shoulder hight or what.
Im not really lookin at bag styles right at this point im more concerned about how tall to get it i will figure out the ears and materials and the fancy stuff later. Im no benchrester.

Thanks

I just purchased my first leather bag, Protektor #14. I'm not a competitive shooter, just wanted a better bag for sighting in hunting rifles and load testing. Shot pretty well yesterday at 100 yards with 22 long rifle.

Firstly the spacing of the ears and top taper on the bag should match your stock. If you can, try stacking books or wood on the bench top to find out the height which gives you the best fit and comfort; use this height for the bag top. With this info call Protektor to discuss the best option.

Hard to say for your personal case. Try to assess that when stacking books under the butt to determine. For me, I always spec the rear to suit comfort and shooting position and make the front fit.

True, I know from borrowing my BIL #14 it would work with my front bags and Caldwell rest. And my hunting stocks, bag works with Rem 40x 22 and HR M12 also.

Well what type of rifle is it? If you aren't a "benchrester" and your rifle is not a benchrest rifle with a straight butt, then you won't want a benhrest bag.

If you do want a leather BR bag regardless, Sebs bags are hard to beat. If it's more of a sporter stock, the "Game Changer" from Armageddon Gear is the best I've used.

On another note, if you are used to shooting from a bipod and are very proficient with it, you probably aren't going to shoot any better with a sporter rifle from a bench rest. I can outshoot myself with a sporter rifle on a bipod from the prone position vs myself on a bench with the same rifle on a rest. Of course BR rifles are a different story. They are built for the bench and stocks are mated perfectly to the rest and bags they are using

In competition the range elevations vary greatly and what works for some ranges won't work for others. Our solution is to use a "donut" aka "dead bottom" which is a "spacer" that provides additional elevation and meets IBS and NBRSA rules. Of course if you are not bound by organizational rules you can use most any non-compressible, non-slip material ( I have 1/2" thick conveyor belting).
I find it best to find the rest set-up height that is most comfortable to you for the shooting method you use (i.e. free recoil, hard hold, pin into front rest stop).
I will also add to develop a shooting posture ( the manner in which you sit at the bench) that is comfortable and gives good results and be consistent in assuming that form.
