Schneider v/s Krieger

I am planning on rebarreling a Rem. 700 SA in .308 and have heard great things about Gary Schneiders barrels. I intended to use one for this project, however a good friend of mine has sugested a Krieger would be a better choice. Any advice would be greatly apreciated!

You haven't said what type shooting you plan on doing. Both barrels are prime examples of quality. I have a Schneider on my GA Precision rifle and another Schneider barreled rifle coming in. Have had Shilen & Douglas and worked with a number of people who have Harts. Seems Kreiger is in every top listing of every match I read about.

If you're doing BR go with Kreiger If you plan on F Class then try Schneider.
Just my $2 works, inflation ya know !!

Will, does your statement mean that F-class barrels don't need to be as accurate as BR barrels? Or does it mean that Krieger barrels are more ac curate than Schneider barrels?

My previous statement means I would, and do) use a Schneider for my F Class AND IF I were to shoot at less than 600 I'd try a Kreiger. I have no doubt a Kreiger barrel will shoot the same distance but I like the way the Schneider 5P has shot for me, is easier to clean than other barrels I have tried . Do I have any "scientific evidence"? No.
If anyone wants to send me a Kreiger barrel, 30 cal, 1:11.25 twist ... I'll be glad to run a test side by side with my Schneider. I'll even be happy to try a used Kreiger since alot of the BR shooters seem to change barrels a whole lot sooner than I do. Currently I have 2K+ rounds down this barrel and I have no reason to change.
Before anyone takes total offense at my postings. I shoot 2 types of matches ... F Class,T/R) and a modified type of F Class where we do shoot from a bench but either bipod or sand bags [bull bags],NO Benchrest type rest). Very seldom do I shoot "tactical" anymore so that doesn't count. No offense intended toward the BR crowd ...

swampgooser,

It will be primarily an F-class on McMillan A-5 stock.

I don't draw any lines between the types of barrels or manufacturers used for particular competitions. I know shooters that do and it works for them which is fine.

The difference between John Krieger's barrels and Gary Schneider's barrels is that the Krieger barrels are cut rifled/lapped and the Schneider barrels are button rifled/lapped. Gary's barrels tend to be lapped a little further than John's but I don't notice that there is any difference in the accuracy between the two. Both are great barrel makers and their barrels shoot with superb accuracy so long as the driver is up to the task.

I am capable of having a good day with one and bad day with another then vice versa the following week. What it comes down to in my opinion is how good I'm reading the wind and paying attention to the details of driving the rifle.

Use the best barrels you can afford and make sure you talk to the barrel maker if there is something special you need or want done to the barrel. I know there's a list of barrel makers on the main website so any of those on that list should work for any of us. There is also a longer list which is available with a search.

Enjoy!

These are both top-tier barrels. As stated, one is cut rifled the other button.

My preference is for a cut rifled barrel on lighter contours and button is fine and sometime preferred on the heavier contours.

I have barrels from both and they are all good barrels. Gary makes some peculiar 30 cal barrels that might interest you.
