Scatt training tips

Read quite a bit on using the Scatt trainer and looking for a few additional useful tips from other users. What did you do that helped you? Anything to avoid?

Found quite a few pdf documents with data and that is a good article. Looking for the personal experiences. Some of the youtube videos are quite good too.

Hold really still when you do it. And avoid shooting 9’s.
Shot a few of them on the 300m target today.... at least two magic 8s as well. 60 shots on 60 minutes will highlight flaws in form and trigger pull quickly. Alittle too quickly for my liking.

The above article is good info, had not read that before. I am focusing on group size, but to be honest I haven't changed much. Trying a jack Jones no pulse sling and like it.

Been using scatt several weeks, some days groups are more round than others. Really focusing on trying to break clean shot with Palma weight trigger. Follow through was something that was lacking seeing the red line take off from the group.

Would like to get to a 5 second average shot time, but not near that yet more in the 7 range.

Been through 3 slings this winter looking for a better option. Never heard of the jack jones.

Trying to analyze my fliers and drive down the group size. I normally shoot with a front lens. Should i use it with the scatt?

Hold and follow through vary more than i care to admit.

Got tired during the 300m match and started jumping the trigger. :(:(:(

I am using my .5 lense in mine and practicing on 1000k target, so the Black is relatively small. If shooting on simulated 50m or 300m going to .3 or no lense might be worth a try but really shouldn’t matter as long as you have enough white. I shoot with a huge amount of white, while Erud shoots with very little. It all depends on what works for you.

When you get a flier do you call it from trigger break or totally off call?

I wouldn’t train for 60 shots either. Work on 20 shot matches, as that is what we shoot normally. If you can shoot 197/6 on 300m in 20 shot you are doing well. That target is crazy hard to clean.

Morgen and have been doing speed drills on ours also. I shoot a 20-Shot string at my normal pace, just trying to break the every shot perfectly, usually takes somewhere between 7-8 minutes. Then after a short break, I will shoot another 20 as fast as I can load and line up the sights, usually 4-4.5 minutes. I’ve been a little surprised to find that while the traces are very different between the 2, the results are almost identical. Just looking a shot placement and score they are basically the same. Morgen has had similar results, but naturally not quite as good as mine. :D A good tool to have in the ol’ toolbox for when conditions or coaches might demand fast shooting.

I agree that 60 shots at a time is probably too much.

After the smart comments you both started out with it is getting good.

Pause for the reload or just cycle the bolt?
I prefer to leave the gun on my shoulder and only take it out once or twice in a 20 shot string. Planning to practice with taking it out more. Thinking that I need to reset in a match since my position melts with recoil. Not calling ones like this. Trace looks good, just never gets to center. Tells me head position..... doesn't it??? I seem to run more white around the front sight on the scatt than i would outdoors.20180408_183808.jpg

That target is hard, not a bad group. I am using a snap cap and ejecting and reloading each shot to try to simulate real shooting- except the recoil.

If building a position, not a bad idea to take gun out of shoulder every 5 shots to make sure u can duplicate it if needed. I shoot the whole string without taking it out, but takes time to get there. Main thing is you have to “know” when the position has changed and when it needs to be rebuilt. If taking it out every shot helps build position, that is fine. Can try both ways. I like leaving it in as I can shoot faster, main reason I have an ejector

I have 2 empty cases in an ammo box and load and unload for each shot.

I do still think that my original advice was best, though...
