Scaling up a Dasher to WSSM or SAUM brass

This would be my definition of almost as big of a handicap as you could get- like running around a corner and getting clotheslined by the lack of good brass, then almost getting up as the people’s elbow (lack of good selection of bullets) knocks you back down. Theres a reason the wssm never took off and it wasnt brass selection- that will follow a good case design like the wsm. I applaud everyone’s experimenting spirit though. Without experimenting we would just be stuck in an uninteresting rut. Design a case and caliber that good brass is listed for or the parent case is in lapua’s lineup. You cant get 10 decent pieces from a bag of wssm brass but youll get 99-101 perfect pieces in a box of lapua

You don't buy 'perfect pieces', you make them.

Truly, it all begins with and builds around bullets.
With this, I see no advantage in odd cals over even cals.
And it just happens that best bullet selections are in even cals; 22, 24, 26, 28, and 30.

Regardless of cal, I like that many here consider bullets first.
Pick a bullet, design a good reloading case with the best capacity for that bullet -given powders available.
As far as magic proportions, I believe there is actually something to that, but not a lot, and you have to build the entire system around it to see it. Any shortcut, and you will fail to reach advantage.

I've seen this with my 6.5wssm Imp. I purposely set it's capacity to match that of the 260AI.
I found that the WSSM proportions are actually more efficient than improved 06 proportions(per the wssm patent). This efficiency would go up a bit more still with a 40 to 60deg shouldered wssm, capacity adjusted.
But if you don't build a system smartly around this wssm case, you will fail to see any of this. You'll hit pressure issues early, and do no better than you would with a 260AI.
The same reasons you can do no better(viably) with a 6.5x284..

Neither the 260AI, nor the 6.5x284, can viably match potentials of a properly built 6.5WSSM IMP.
Wanna miss a clothesline? Better 3kfps with 140gr 26cal bullets, using only ~47gr of IMR4350.
Shoot out 3 cut rifled barrels with the same box of brass (at 1900 rounds accurate barrel life), having never body sized, or trimmed, or re-annealed, & pockets still tight as a virgin.
Not suggesting it couldn't be done with Lapua brass,, but point to where it has.

Howdy !

" Temperature stable " powders w/ burn rates between the 2 powders you mentioned would be
IMR4451 and IMR 4955, far as I can tell.

I have tried both w/ 105-107gr 6mm bullets in my 6mm wildcat that has 51.2gr H2O case capacity.
In that application ( 29" 1-8 barrel ), I found IMR4451 to be slightly slower in burn rate than
H4350.

The Hogdon chart I saw listed IMR4955 as being the next " slower " powder than H4831/SC.
Again, that seems pretty consistent w/ what I found shooting my 6mm wildcat @ the range.

There was a reason I went with 7mm projectiles. 110 to 195 grain options from a dozen vendors.

Dusty Stevens, I don't see how the short/fat WSSM cartridge design is a limitation; that's basically the foundation of all BR cartridges. What would you have changed regarding the design of the WSSM cartridge?
