Scale woes !

Well after 8 years of excellent service, my Pact DPPS is being very inconsistent. I will send it to Pact (Lifetime warranty), for repairs, but I need a NEW digital scale by next week. I am looking for recomendations for a very good quality digital scale for less than $500 ? (if this is possible) If I have to pay more than $500, I may just buy another Pact DPPS for $130, & hope that I'll get another 7 or so years with it.

I have a GemPro 250 that I think is a good scale for the money. When it works it works great and very accurate. After a few months mine has gotten to where it has started drifting and the weight slowly increases every couple of measurements and then it may or may not go back to a good measurement or the error may continue to increase. Calibrating it again may or may not correct it for a while. Right now I am back to my Redding Beam Balance scale with my small portable Hornady Electronic scale as a backup. The GemPro has a life time warranty so I will post about how their customer service works when I get it back.

Hey GMAN>>>>About your "Lifetime Warranty" from PACT.... I had a Pact Professional chronograph for about 15 years. It had a "lifetime warranty" too... Two (2) years ago it went bad. I called them up and asked what I needed to do to get mine replaced. They said I could not get it replaced! They stated that it was so old that they could not get the computer boards replaced and I needed a new one.. So they told me the best they could do was give me 33pct off of a new one. I asked them why they could not just send me a replacement>>>their answer was because since they can't FIX it they will give me 33pct off a new one! SO MUCH FOR LIFETIME WARRANTY! Then they sent it to me not packaged at all>>just in the "box" that the thing would come in if they were sold at a sporting good store. Well when I got it it was broken and I sent it back with a very stern note. They said they would send one out in a few weeks as they did not have any in their inventory.. Well I got it packaged properly and it works>>>BUT it is a PILE OF JUNK compared to the one I had for so long! I won't deal with a worthless company like them anymore!!

Thanks for all the input guys. It looks like I'm going with the Gempro 250.

If you have been happy with the level of accuracy of the Pact, .1 gr if I remember correctly, I have a bit of a non standard suggestion. Take a look at this (see below), and consider that it is a lot more sensitive, and will not develop drift or any or the other electronic scale issues. I have used the Gempro 250, and do not discount its suitability. I am just pointing out another alternative that you may not have considered. I believe that he gets around $60 to tune a scale, but this could be out of date.

Thank You Gary for the offer ! That is a very kind and generous thing to do, but I'll order the GemPro 250 on Friday, and it should be here by next week. I will use the Pact for a back up scale, when it gets returned from repair. Thanks Again !

One thing that needs to be improved on the GemPro 250 is the plastic lid. It is too small. I realize that the small size of the scale itself means the lid has to be small but it would help if they made the clear plastic lid taller. I have found that the use of the lid is a necessity because of the sensitivity of the scale, especially to air currents. Even with the ceiling fan off and the air conditioning/heater off there will be a difference in weight with the lid open or closed, maybe I am breathing too hard. The GemPro comes with a very small plastic pan with just small tabs to hold it with. I have modified another deeper plastic pan to work but it has to be on the scale just right for the lid to clear. I have thought about making a small metal pan to fit to avoid the static electricity that sometimes happens with the plastic pan which I have to wipe with a clothes dryer anti static cloth. I have learned to deal with most of the issues but as I said in my prior post I have to send it off for repair which will be a test of their customer service.

I have actually thought of designing an "overcoat" case for the Gempro, primarily because of the lid issue. The rest of the scale seems to be just fine, but the size of the lid, and the design of its hinges leave something to be desired.

My wife mentioned using a small clear glass cake/pastry top to set over the scale. She said at one time we had one that was about 6 inches in diameter and 4 inches tall with a knob on top but it broke when one of the grandkids dropped it. I am sure they would also come in plastic but may not be as clear to look through. I just asked her to find me one.

Thanks for the quick find but the 6 inch one will be to small. The GemPro is about 7 inches diagonal so a 8 inch cover would work. I put a 8 inch plastic bowl over it and it fit good. I did see some clear 12 inch covers on the internet but will look for a 8 inch clear. Let us know if you find one. Thanks for your effort.

Gem Pro 250, I have 2 of them. because one can be a little hard headed sometimes. Varget is .02 per kernel.

I just looked at the Sartorious GD503. Wow, I can't believe that they cost $900 2 years ago, now they are $1400. I might consider $900, but I'm not spending $1400 +.

Yeah...GD503 is nice and the price hike is ridiculous. There is another scale that looks pretty nice...the A&D FX 120i. I don't hear as much about it as the GD503, but looks nice.

I have a Gempro 250 and been using it for over 2 years and has been working great. One downside is the amount of time it takes to register when trickling up...wish it was faster. I use an RCBS powder pan instead of the miniature plastic pan.

Remember if you use a heavier metal pan nstead of the lighter plastic one, the overall weight on the scale will increase sigificantly and that will make detecting a slight change in weight more difficult and slower i.e. when you tickle in small amounts of powder.

Interesting to know...sounds like that would make sense. I haven't noticed a difference, but then again I wasn't aware. Next time I load, I will see if there is a difference. I tend to fumble with the micro sized pan and scatter powder everywhere, lol
