K,
The charging handle is only on the LR version and is on the left side of the rifle.

Scroll down to MSR10 Long Range.
I will respectfully disagree with Mr. Rust over "the side charging handle of the long range is something that should have been on all ARs from the very beginning". Not sure about the other statement either: "But other than that it's another clone built for the tacti-cool market." Do you have some insider knowledge? Should they not have made the rifles? It is their company, isn't it? Sorry, the eye dilation this morning has me seeing bright things when they really aren't there................
I've used/owned a variety of "black rifles". Typically they all had good points and less good points.
For instance the L1A1 (inch rather than metric version of the FN-FAL), loved the 11 position including "off" adjustable gas port, the op-rod gas system and the side charging handle but didn't like not having a good scope mount system available or the trigger. That 11 position gas port allows tuning the action to function with virtually any load without excessive hammering or short stroking.
Daewoo DR-100 liked the side charging, adjustable gas port, op-rod but the available scope mount system was a little underwhelming.
Flat top AR-15s, best scope mount system as it is integral to the upper, not fond of direct gas impingement, don't like the charging handle system, don't like the concept forward assist, like the ejection port dust cover. Typically does not come with an adjustable gas port which san be needed for use with a suppressor (can cycle too hard hammering the action), or with loads that vary too much from NATO spec.
FN-49 - Sort of the NATO equivalent of the M-14. No really good scope attachment method.
AR-10 - And yes I have two. Unlike the majority of AR-15s being Mil-Spec insuring standardization and interchangeability of components, AR-10 designs tend towards being brand specific to a greater or lesser degree. Most AR-10s do not come equipped with an adjustable gas port, pretty much a must have with a suppressor (cycles the action too hard), sub-sonic loads (doesn't fully cycle the action) and a some of hand loads (either/or on cycling depending on the load).
Why do I like a side charging non reciprocating system? Properly designed takedown is the same, and it allows less physical movement to use and is easier to use prone behind the rifle. In an AR platform, properly designed means not cut into the bolt carrier group guide rails. If guide rail material is removed it potentially allows for the bolt carrier group to rock around during cycling which can cause accelerated wear and/or binding.
As to my opinions on the "me too" and "tacti-cool" aspects of things, well, chalk that up to a somewhat dyspeptic viewpoint that took years to develop. Typically one thing that has influenced that opinion is watching new owners of such rifles burn through ammo as fast as they can pull the trigger mainly missing a 25 yard target. After a limited number of range trips they are never seen again after the initial thrill wears off.
Hopefully Savage, as a reputable manufacturer, is making a solid reliable AR-10 clone. I recognize that their business decision is based on marketplace realities, that being the current popularity of such platforms.
