Savage VS Remington

(Remington 700 VS Savage 110 or similiar Savage) Judging what's on the Shelf at this very moment, which action is the better bang for the Buck right out of the Box. Who has the Better Barrels until I replace it? If I buy a Rifle, do I get a better trigger for my money with the Rem or the Savage? Also, is there any issues with threading Stainless Barrels into either Action that is not Stainless? My experience has indicated Stainless threads Gaul up pretty easy. Thanks

Sorry to disagree... but the question was "out of the box" not clones. Savage - makers of some of the ugliest actions, generally shoot well. BUT - change the trigger! - unless you buy one with the target version.
Just my not-so-humble opinion.

I bought my first center fire rife at the age of 59. Before that I shot a K98 Mauser I borrowed from my Dad. When I looked for my first rifle I wanted a 2lb trigger, a free floating barrel and a stock that had an metal bed for the action. The K98 had not of these. I choose a Savage, because it had those features for less dollars. Four years later I'm ready for a custom action, which most likely will be a Remington clone. It all depends on where you are at in your journey.

Had I done it all over with the knowledge I have today I might have choose a Tikka or Howa for my first rifle.

I have several Savage rifles. All work well and shoot great. The target actions are my favorite. The accutriggers are excellent. I have put SS barrels on many with no problems. I use Tetra grease on the threads. I have made custom rifles with these actions that will shoot sub 2" at 600 yards. My model 12 Benchrest in 6 BR will shoot 2-3" at 600.

Have fun!

I cant say which is better, I dont shoot Remington firearms. I can tell you that I purchased a Savage Pro Hunter chambered in 6.5 CM , the rifle out of the box shot approx a 4.5 inch group at 1000 yards with factory Hornaday 140gr Match ammo.
You be the judge. And yes I do have proof.

It depends on your expectations . A savage will get you to an advanced state along with precision hand loading . Once you max out you rifle you'll be looking to upgrade , usually a custom . This will happen with any action you buy .
Savage has it for accuracy , parts and cost . That said the new Remington 783 takes the best from savage , Remington and Winchester . It's got LESS aftermarket goodies but is a superior design to all . 90 degree sear , savage barrel threads and nut , articulated bolt head , short striker fall , easier bolt lift than savage , rigid receiver .
The cost advantage and accuracy ( usually ) go to savage .

Ask yourself this question-
How many Custom Clones do you see on the market that resemble a SALVAGE?
NONE.
Shilen has Stiller make two models I can think of..DGV DGR single & a repeater w either 1/16 or 1/20 threads..Best part is you can hang a Jewell or a B&A trigger ...Mike in CT

Oh yeah, If I was doing it all myself..I'd go with an old Savage & upgrade w the just ok Rifle basic II trigger...I've done plenty of them..Mike in Ct PS I'd like to hear more from Gmac about this newer Remington 783

I always bought Remington. Older ones. When I went to buy another one, I checked out a few and the action with the black bolt was terrible. Went to Savage and they are better than anticipated. I do re barrel them as I got the Cabellas FV for $250 for the whole gun a while back.

So you're telling me I can install a Savage Barrel in the 783?

wonder if well ever see that deal again--i might buy one

Same threads and nuts . The barrel face USUALLY needs .005-.008 removed .
The Remington 783 bolt nose recess is a little deeper requiring the barrel to be faced .
They can still be used on the savage after this procedure .
I really prefer the new Remington to almost all current factory rifles , no matter the cost .

Well, then maybe we should be comparing the Savage to the 783. So which Savage? Which one is thicker, are they both made from the same Tubing? What kind of Material?

The 783 is more rigid than the savage , not counting the single shot target models . It is a very solid design , I've converted a few to left feed right eject . It makes bench shooting so much easier .
I do believe rigid receivers are better than say a Lee enfield design , but I think it's way over rated as most modern receivers are equal .
