I have freds triggers(comp type not evo) and they work ok but the sav-2 is a better built trigger and if you adjust the tension on the safety so you have little to no slop it wont trip,at least that is my experience. The safety will work harder but it gets rid of the false feel with a sloppy safety and it wont trip as easy if set the 8-10 ounce's. The trigger and sear on a savage are garbage compared to anyone else's but we can make them work very well.

What's a PTA?

this is a old thread but a.... PTA is a precision target action made by savage..I have the F12 Palma action 3.4 screw spacing with 3 screws trigger is the factory accutrigger.I took the blade out polished the trigger surfaces and have a 6 oz safe reliable trigger with a bolt lift kit...very smooth..but nothing like a custom action

I have built 2 rifles with a PTA and used the accutrigger on both originally and on my heavy gun 284 WIN I had the bolt timed and trued and the accutrigger tweaked. Later, I had Fred put an evolution on it and timed and trued the action.. Never looked back! Fred is my go to gun smith and next barrel he will do it. I have had a few barrels done locally in the Sacramento area but now it is only Fred!
I changed my heavy gun to a SAV-2 I had on an old 30-06 hunting rifle built when they first came out. It works great, but I can't say it is any better than a carefully adjusted accutrigger. I just haven't found a good reason to change back.
Funny thing, there has been a number of guys starting long range BR here and some are/were VERY good shooters. some of them sold the Savage and bought expensive custom rifles. After shooting them a while, most of them shoot about as good as with the Savage and some are very good shots including one with a record. I and a couple other guys still shoot the Savage PTA and most times do well. results are in the hands of the trigger puller, not the custom builder!
