Savage Trigger

Who makes the best affordable benchrest trigger for a Savage Model 12? I have a single-shot Mod. 12 VLP in .223 Rem. that I had a Sharpshooter Supply trigger installed on awhile back, and am very disappointed with it. My gunsmith was unable to get the trigger pull down below 1 lb 6 oz, in spite of SSS's claiming it'd adjust down to 10 oz. I used it that way for club level BR, all I'm interested in, but was never really satisfied with it, so I tried a coupla days ago to get it down. I was able to shave off a coupla ounces, but now have a bit of creep that it didn't have before, and the pull is still too heavy. I'm tired of messing with it. SSS makes a better trigger for BR, but will only sell it to you if you have it installed by them and have the action trued at the same time, which puts the cost well above what I'm willing to spend.

Rifle Basix has one for $160 that sounds good (the Sav-2)--if it performs up to their claims. They also claim it's easy to install. They have an instructional DVD, too. I can't seem to get either of their on-line versions to play clips (they have two, in different resolutions.) Does anybody here have one of these triggers? If so, (1) is it easy to install?, (2) Will I need any of the factory parts to install it? (The Savage trigger bracket had to be cut for my SSS trigger) and (3) how does it perform? Is it easy to adjust? My SSS trigger requires the adjustment of 2 screws (trigger pull and sear engagement) to adjust trigger pull. Any change in one affects the other, which is perhaps why I can't get the pull I want. Maybe I'm just too dum. ::)

Finally, does anybody else make a good trigger for my Savage that'll get down to the level I want; i.e., less than 10 oz. or so? If there is one, I haven't found it.

Lloyd,
I've got both the SAV-2 and the SSS triggers. I have installed both. I like the SAV-2 the best. Not difficult to install and adjust IF you pay attention to the instructions. YES you need the bracket and sear spring from the original trigger. TEST, TEST and TEST again before loading ammunition in the chamber to make sure the safety works and no slam fires.
I'm not expert by any means, just an average guy that loves to shoot Savage rifles.

I have them all and the ones we can install in my opinion is the sav-2 by rifle basix. SSS makes their evolution trigger but you have to have it time and trued plus trigger which is a 300.00 bill and up.

One other thing,if you do get a smith to do any work,I would choose stockade stocks who is Kevin Rayhill at 1-308-432-5114.

I've installed about a dozen Rifle Basix triggers in various rifles, mostly Ruger VT's, but a couple of Salvages too. And everyone is happy with them. :) The SSS triggers.... I hear more complaints than accolades thus I don't mess with them. :( WD

I have four Rifle basics 2's and an SSS evolution trigger.
All four of my RB2's break at 7 ounces. This is the lightest they would go on my rifles and still function safely for bench use. Try to set them lower and you'll have functioning and bump mishaps, no good.

The evo works pretty good. It's not a jewel but it probably breaks in the 2- 3 ounce range. Besides the high cost there's design flaws that would stop me from ever buying another.

Jim--My trigger bracket was cut to fit the SSS trigger. I looked at the pictures of the SAV-2 trigger on the Rifle Basix site, and it looks like it comes assembled in a mounting bracket, but I guess from what you say that's not true. Do you know if my modified trigger bracket will work, or do I need a replacement? I googled it & can't find another bracket there, so I guess I'll need to get one from Savage if I do go for the SAV-2, right? Thanks.
Lloyd

Lloyd,
I'd think you can use the bracket you already have. You only cut that notch in the accutrigger bracket but not the standard trigger bracket and the SAV-2 will work for both.

Thanks, Jim. That's just what I was hoping to hear!

Lloyd, I have the Sav-2 trigger in one of my Savages and will be glad to let you take a look and if you decided on one, I'll help you install it.

I've long hated the Savage triggers, but like the rifles very much. I have some friends who also have the Savage Model 12 6mmBR's like mine and I finally installed the Sav2 as well and have not looked back. None of of the BS that goes on with the standard BR trigger that in my opinion, is the only FLAW (and a big one) Savage made when producing this rifle and there are limited options to go to in replacing that BS trigger. I'm certain you'll be pleased with the Rifle Basix Sav-2 and is well worth the investment.

Thanks, George, I'll take you up on that! Talk more about it at Thursday's match.

The std one, not the EVO. Done 6 or so of them, could get them significantly lighter than a factory 1.5 and crisp, safe, and stay in adjustment. SAV-2 on the other hand could never get truly safe below 2 lb or so, no advantage over a factory 1.5lb varmint/early target. Light pull target type triggers for Savage there's really only one, that's the SSS EVO.

I'm the opposite- dislike the SAV-2 like the SSS.

Which SSS trigger do you have?

I have both the standard sss trigger, and a rifle basix sav-2. I hate the sss trigger. I love the sav-2. Like someone above already stated in my savage the lowest i could get it set to where it will not slam fire, and the safety works properly is 7oz.'s. It is not a jewell, but jewell does not make a trigger for these rifles. I am very happy with the rifle basix. It took me quite a long time to get it to function to my satisfaction, and when i installed mine i found a youtube video that was much more helpful then the video that comes with the trigger. Good luck.

Sonofagun! Can you send me a link to the youtube video? I'd like to take a look at it!

For all who might be interested, I got an unsolicited email today from Lisa at SSS, offering to take my trigger back for inspection. If there's anything wrong with it, she says they'll fix or replace it.

I consider this great customer service, and also a tribute to this forum. For sure, the good folks at SSS read it.

In all honesty, I never suspected anything was really wrong with the trigger, only that it for some reason couldn't meet my expectations. not at all necessarily a manufacturing problem.

Lloyd,
Lets us know how that works for you and how long it takes. Hopefully SSS has got it together with time frames and doesn't hold that trigger for ransom.

Jim--not sure how long it might take. I just sent the gun out for a new barrel. I got a look at it thru a borescope today, and it was enough to make my hair stand on end--what little I have left, anyway. But I'll post the results when it's all done.
