Savage Target action vs Stevens 200 action

How much better is the Savage Varmint/Target action than the Stevens 200?

The trigger is better and they are stiffer but what does that translate into in the real world?

If you built a 6br to shoot at 600, everything being the same, stock, barrel, glass etc. and used a Target action in one and a 200 action with a decent trigger in the other, what would be the accuracy difference?

The target action comes with a better trigger and can be had in various bolt and port configurations, plus it is a solid bottom single shot action using the large shank barrels.

Folks think the "target action" is the top of the line. ???
Just pick up a Savage single shot action from Jim Briggs (Northland Shooter Supply) if you don't care about which port it has.
Small shank,Stainless steel,.473 bolt face, light Accu Trigger. Slap a barrel on it and you're set. Spend the rest of the $$ on bullets, brass and powder. ;) And like Joe says, your wallet will tell the difference. ;D

The Target Actions, especially the 'new' ones, are much better machined and have been getting continual upgrades. In theory, they are a much better action. On paper... I've never shot one side by side but I expect that given equal barrels the difference would be small. Some of the changes are more safety/strength related - relocating the action screw holes for better thread engagement and a full bedding pillar in the rear, etc.

One big benny of the new(est) actions is the bolt faces are machined, hardened, polished, and then re-machined *flat*, where as the older ones (and the Stevens) are not - and may suffer from a dished bolt face.

The single shots are substantially stiffer and your bedding will be better since you have one big uninterrupted surface between the action screws.

Ruger Ralphie: Go over to Savage Shooters and check out Northland Shooter Supply (Jim Briggs).
I just picked up 2 single shot actions. They "are" available. ;D

Short Action - Stainless Single Shot Actions:
Savage Model 12 - .378 Bolt Face - Lightweight Accu-Trigger - Stainless - 4.25" Spacing - Sold Out
Savage Model 12 - .473 Bolt Face - Lightweight Accu-Trigger - Stainless - 4.25" Spacing - $390.00 (No Longer Offered By Savage)

Jim got the last batch I guess! :) When I last spoke with him, he informed me that Savage would not be offering them anymore and he wasn't sure if he was going to be able to get anymore! Guess he did! ;)

If you're talking about the Stevens 200, just drop a single shot follower in the mag. It won't be as stiff as a solid bottom single shot but I don't think you'll be able to tell the difference.
All my repeater actions have the follower and I single feed. You can get a adaptor to convert the newer center feed actions to single shot from Sharp Shooter Supply. It eliminates the mag. I've got one on the way. I got my single shot actions about 2 weeks ago. As of 4/21, Jim Briggs (NNS) still shows the Savage Model 12 single shot actions available. And if you want to go a different route ($$) you could have a piece tac welded into the bottom on the repeater to make it a single shot. I thought of that for my lefty pistol build till I found the adaptor plug to eleminate the mag.
