Savage Target Action, How long a barrel??

7stubby

Some days it doesn't pay to even get out of bed.
How long of a barrel would a Savage Target Action take?? 28" 30"+??? Let me know. Thanks Jake

The Savage Target series rifles come with 28" to 30" barrels of a heavy contour, so i am sure you wont have any issues with a 30" barrel in something like a Heavy Varmint contour. I don't know about a straight 1.25" barrel though, but as long as it tapers to at least .9" by the muzzle you should be ok. But make sure you have a good bedding job, or you will have issues no matter what.

But with a barrel that long, you may want to bed the first 2" to 4" of barrel, basically right to the rifles balance point, so to give the barrel a bit more support.

Going with a shouldered barrel may be of benefit as well, though I am not sure of that.

Yes, I agree with Kenny 100% all good points.
No problem going to the Heavy Varmint 30 inch (have done quite a few). and as Kenny said they come stock standard with a 1 inch barrel by 30 inch long. Factories always build in a safety factor too.
Just do up the nut or barrel to a fair torque (say 60-65 ft lbs) to help hold barrel up.

Well I have a straight contour 6mm barrel finish at 30inch I was wanting to do a build on, but money is too tight for a custom action that I would like, but money isnt really tight for a savage target action. lol Just checking to see what people are running on those actions. Seems to be just like a Remington action, just bed 2-4 inches in front of the lug and your good to go. Thanks Jake

Yeah, my Savage F Class (target action) rifle came with 30", 1 inch muzzle diameter barrel.

I'm sure it can handle more.

Straightpipes is shooting a 32 inch heavy tube on his Savage Action. This is a 7WSM that shoots really well. It's bedded well with a pad under the barrel in front of the lug and nut. He built the stock [nice stock] with a longer forearm for good balance. This guy is a craftsman and this rifle is jam-up. ;)

The only other comment I would make would be on the bedding in front of recoil lug. This is fine if you have 1 barrel. If you decide you want to switch barrels later on just ensure the next barrel is going to bed properly there too. Savage kept all bedding back behind recoil lug for this reason so you could change barrels of all OD's without problems. No problem with a good bedding job behind recoil lug only for a barrel that size.
