Savage target action ejector help please

Maybe the answer is previously posted but here is the question. I have a dual port Savage target action I shot on the bench without the ejector installed for a few years. Now this is a P-dog gun and I want to load left, eject right but I don't want the empties to go flying. When I reinstall the ejector, how much of the spring should I cut off to get 22BR cases to eject around 12" or so?

Clip the spring till it flops the fired cases just where you want them.
All mine are removed so I pick each case off the bolt head. No chasing fired brass, ever.

I was too lazy to clip and reassemble multi[ple times so I guessed at 3 coils. Got really lucky and they flop out about 8" now. No doubt I can get the barrel too hot running it fast this way.
